K-State Finishes Ninth at Big 12 Championship

Apr 24, 2022 | Women's Golf

HOCKLEY, Texas - The Kansas State women's golf team closed out its 2021-22 season on Sunday with a ninth-place finish at the 2022 Big 12 Championship, held at the par-71, 6,249-yard Houston Oaks Golf Club.

The Wildcats carded a 32-over par 316 final round to bring their final 54-hole total to 84-over par 936.

"Obviously very disappointed with the scores this week," head coach Kristi Knight said. "The ladies wanted to have better results for sure. It's hard when you are struggling to not press and to let it happen and let it come to you."

Haley Vargas finished in 26th place to lead K-State on the leaderboard. Vargas carded her second 2-over par 74 round of the tournament to finish at 13-over par 226.

"I'm proud of Haley," Knight said. "She played a lot of good golf for three days."

There were four Wildcats who stacked up next to each further down the standings.

Heather Fortushniak, a senior, finished in 40th place at 24-over par 237 after shooting an 11-over par 82 final round. Fortushniak brought her Wildcat career to a close after 18 career appearances.

One stroke behind her was Napua Glossner, who carded a 13-over par 84 third round and finished in 41st place at 25-over par 238.

Donche-Gay shot an 8-over par 79 third round and finished in 42nd place at 26-over par 239. The junior college transfer ended the season as the team leader in stroke average at 75.04.

In 43rd place was Remington Isaac at 29-over par 242 after the freshman tallied a 10-over par 81 final round.

No. 14 Texas won the 2022 Big 12 Championship at 24-over par 876. Lianna Bailey of No. 6 Oklahoma State claimed the individual title at 2-over par 215.

Though not the end to the season that Knight and K-State were hoping for, there is still belief in the talent on the team moving forward.

"It's tough, but we will be back and be stronger," Knight said.
