Wildcats Tied for Seventh After Two Rounds
Apr 26, 2022 | Men's Golf
TRINITY, Texas – Through two rounds on Tuesday at the 2022 Big 12 Championship, the Kansas State men's golf team is tied for seventh place at 30-over par 606.Â
Â
K-State completed their first round after Monday's weather delay, shooting an 11-over par 299 to begin the day at the par-72, 7,467-yard Whispering Pines Golf Club. The Wildcats would go on to card a 19-over par 307 second round.Â
Â
The Cats are joined in a three-way tie for seventh place with Baylor and Iowa State, while they are just two strokes behind No. 27 Kansas for sixth place.Â
Â
"We really struggled the last 11 holes or so," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It's one of those things where it's a really difficult golf course, and if you are just a little bit off, then you will be penalized. We hit some poor shots, lost some confidence and things kind of spiraled from there."
Â
Nicklaus Mason, a freshman, leads K-State on the leaderboard in a tie for 20th place. Mason carded back-to-back 2-over par 74 rounds to bring his 36-hole total to 4-over par 148.
Â
Will Hopkins got his performance off to a solid start with a 1-under par 71 first round that placed him in the top-10, but he slipped in the standings after a 7-over par 79 second round. Hopkins is currently in 29th place at 6-over par 150.Â
Â
In a tie for 39th place at 10-over par 154 is Laurenz Schiergen. The freshman carded a 9-over par 81 first round but responded with a 1-over par 73 second round.Â
Â
Tim Tillmanns is tied for 43rd place at 12-over par 156 after tallying a 3-over par 75 first round and a 9-over par 81 second round. Just behind him is Luke O'Neill, who is tied for 46th place at 16-over par 160. O'Neill shot a 7-over par 79 opening round and a 9-over par 81 second round.Â
Â
"The biggest thing for us is to put those last few holes behind us and get focused on tomorrow," Robbins said. "There's a lot of golf left, and our guys are tough competitors. We just need to go out and play freely and fight for every shot."
Â
Kansas State will attempt to do just that when the 2022 Big 12 Championship, which was shortened to 54 holes following Monday's weather suspension, concludes on Wednesday morning with the final round beginning at 8 a.m. Fans can follow live scoring on Golfstat.com.Â
