K-State Falls in Series Opener at Oklahoma

Apr 29, 2022 | Baseball

NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma's Jake Bennett struck out 11 while throwing seven innings of two-hit ball in leading the Sooners to a 14-2 victory over K-State in the series opener Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Oklahoma's offense supported Bennett with 16 hits – 12 of which went for extra bases. Peyton Graham homered twice and drove in four while Tanner Tredaway went 3-for-5 with a game-high five RBI.

"Bennett was the story of the night," said head coach Pete Hughes. "When you get a kid in a groove like that, where you know runs are going to be at a premium, you're always chasing. Credit to them, they got a good start and they got two-out hits and big hits with runners on base."

Bennett retired the last 10 Wildcats he faced and 12 of last 13. He allowed just three baserunners, scattering two hits and hitting a batter.

K-State (21-20, 3-10 Big 12) pushed a baserunner to second base in three consecutive innings – second through fourth – but the Cats were unable to scratch across a run against the Sooner lefty.

Oklahoma (26-14, 8-5 Big 12) scored in six of eight innings it came to the plate, posting crooked numbers in four different frames.

Graham's first home run of the day extended a one-run lead to a 4-0 score in the third. Jackson Nicklaus gifted OU an early lead with a solo shot in the second.

Tredaway roped a two-run, two-out double in the fifth, which marked six earned runs against K-State starter Connor McCullough. McCullough matched his career high with five walks while allowing seven hits over his six innings, with five going for extra bases. The redshirt sophomore struck out three.

The two-run fifth sparked a string of four consecutive innings in which the Sooners scored, adding two in the seventh before a five-run eighth.

In the eighth, OU totaled five hits, with four going for extra bases. Tredaway connected on a two-run homer while Blake Robertson and John Spikerman each roped RBI doubles.

Both of K-State's runs came in the ninth, as Kaelen Culpepper and Brendan Jones each picked up pinch-hit RBI singles. Orlando Salinas led off the ninth with a pinch-hit double. Three of the Cats' six hits came in the ninth inning.

Nick Goodwin doubled in the fourth, as he and Salinas turned in the only extra-base hits for K-State on the evening.

Four Wildcat pitchers combined to walk eight and strike out nine.

Oklahoma hit .500 (9-for-18) with men on base while going 7-for-14 with two outs. OU tallied five two-out RBI.

K-State combined for just one hit with two outs (1-for-9) and two with men on base (2-for-9).

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Graham's 11th home run of the season was set up by a leadoff walk by Kendall Pettis and a single from Spikerman. Nicklaus lifted a solo homer in the second inning for the game's initial run.

A double by Graham and a walk by Robertson, McCullough's fifth of the day, preceded a two-run double from Tredaway in the fifth. The Sooners collected three doubles in the inning, as they stretched their lead to 6-0.

A two-out double from Pettis, after the inning was extended by a Wildcat error, tacked on a run in the sixth. Graham's second homer, a solo shot, and an RBI triple punctuated a two-run seventh inning, as the OU advantage swelled to nine runs.
