Low Second Round From Tillmanns Highlights Day Two in Norman

NORMAN, Okla. - Behind a historic individual round from Tim Tillmanns, the Kansas State men's golf team carded a greatly improved even-par 288 second round to move into a tie for ninth place on Tuesday at 2022 NCAA Norman Regional, held at the par-72, 7,452-yard Jimmie Austin Golf Club.
The Wildcats' 36-hole total sits at 14-over par 590.
"We played a really solid round today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "All five guys were in it most of the day, and Tim really got it going on the back nine."
Tillmanns got it going indeed.
The junior shot a 5-under par 67 second round, which is the lowest round by a Wildcat in their NCAA Regional/Championship history. Of the 75 golfers competing today in Norman, Tillmanns' round tied for the lowest score of the day as he tallied six birdies and just a single bogey to do so.
Tillmanns day-two performance resulted in a 31 spot rise up the standings and into a tie for eighth place at 3-under par 141.
"He was very steady all day. He kept the ball in play, hit a lot of greens and made a few putts down the stretch," Robbins said of the Cologne, Germany product. "He's been struggling this spring, so it's definitely good to see him regain his form and get some confidence going."
With 18 holes remaining, Tillmanns has put himself in position to possibly advance to the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Golf National Championship as an individual. The top individual at the Norman Regional from a non-advancing team will earn the berth.
Next on the leaderboard for K-State are Will Hopkins and Nicklaus Mason, who are tied for 36th place at 4-over par 148. Hopkins shot a 1-over par 73 second round, while Mason recorded his second 2-over par 74 round of the tournament.
Rounding out the Wildcat lineup, Laurenz Schiergen and Luke O'Neill both saw solid round-two improvement. Schiergen carded a 2-over par 74 second round to bring his 36-hole total to 9-over par 153 and move into a tie for 62nd place. O'Neill is tied for 65th at 10-over par 154 after shooting a 3-over par 75 second round.
"The conditions were actually tougher, and we were 14 shots better than yesterday," Robbins said. "The difference was I thought we did a much better job of being committed and making confident aggressive swings. We have to take that same mentality out there again tomorrow and see what happens."
No. 3 seed Auburn leaped into first place thanks to a 12-under par 276 round, while Travis Vick of Texas is atop the individual leaderboard at 10-under par 134.
The 2022 NCAA Norman Regional will conclude Wednesday morning with tee times starting the Wildcats' final round at 9:25 a.m. Fans can follow live scoring throughout the day on Golfstat.com.
