K-State Finishes Ninth at NCAA Regional

NORMAN, Okla. - The 2021-22 campaign for the Kansas State men's golf team concluded on Wednesday as the Wildcats finished in ninth place at 2022 NCAA Norman Regional, held at the par-72, 7,452-yard Jimmie Austin Golf Club.
The Cats were unable to move up the leaderboard and missed the five-team cut for the National Championship, finishing at 18-over par 882 after a 4-over par 292 third round.
"I'm proud of the guys and how they competed. Unfortunately, we weren't really able to get anything going today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We knew going in that we were going to have to go really low. When you get off to a slow start, it can be a little deflating.
"I'm proud, though, of how they kept grinding throughout the round," Robbins said. "Overall, this was a great experience for us."
Tim Tillmanns was the leader for K-State this week, finishing in a tie for 14th place at 2-under par 214 after carding a 1-over par 73 final round. The junior's performance was highlighted by a 5-under par 67 second round, which was the lowest round by a Wildcat in their NCAA postseason history.
His 14th-place finish is the highest by a Wildcat in an NCAA Regional since Robert Streb finished 12th at the NCAA Central Regional in 2006.
Nicklaus Mason tallied his best round of the tournament on Wednesday with an even-par 72, bringing him into a tie for 32nd place at 4-over par 220. Just behind him was Will Hopkins, who tied for 40th at 6-over par 222. The senior recorded a 2-over par 74 third round to close out his performance.
Laurenz Schiergen continued to improve throughout the week, carding a 1-over par 73 final round to make a six-spot jump and tie for 56th place at 10-over par 226. Luke O'Neill tied for 63rd place at 12-over par 228 but also saw his best score of the week, recording a 2-over par 74 third round.
Oklahoma, the top-ranked team in the country, ran away with the regional at 26-under par 838, while Jackson Suber of Ole Miss led the individual leaderboard at 11-under par 205.
Finishing in the top-five along with the Sooners, Auburn, Texas, Ole Miss and Utah will all advance to the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Golf National Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona at the Grayhawk Golf Club, May 27-June 1. South Carolina's Evans Lewis moved on to nationals as the top individual not on an advancing team as he tied for fifth place at 6-under par 210, including a 3-under par 69 final round.
The Wildcats now head into the offseason after one of the best years in school history, which included six top-five finishes and the second-best stroke average in school history at 288.24.
"It's rewarding to make it to NCAA's, but then again there's a hunger for more," Robbins said. "We are really young, and with everyone returning next year, this is something we can definitely build on. Everyone needs to work hard over the summer and keep getting better. Hopefully we will have more opportunities in the future."
