Three Wildcats Take Home Second Team Honors at the Conclusion of Day Two
Jun 10, 2022 | Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Three members of the Kansas State track and field team walked away with Second Team All-American honors on Thursday (June 9) after the conclusion of day two for the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.
Seniors Kassidy Johnson (women's 800 meters) and Tommi Hintnaus (women's pole vault) and freshman Emil Uhlin (decathlon) each earned All-America honors in their respective events to highlight action on Thursday.
At the end of two days of competition, Uhlin closed out the men's decathlon in 12th place with a total of 7,546 points and earning Second Team All-American accolades.
"The things I look for are how the athlete competes and how they place relative to their ranking coming into the meet," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Emil was the last qualifier coming in and he placed 12th. He competed well and didn't give in when he could have. The singular most impressive thing about Emil this year is how he competes. He did a great job at conference after a disastrous hurdle race and persevered here not feeling great physically the second day."
In the 110-meter hurdles section of the men's heptathlon, Uhlin clocked in a personal-best time of 15.29 and finished in 19th. Right after the 110-meter hurdles, Uhlin made his way to the discus throw. With a heave of 40.96m/134-4, the Sweden native claimed 10th place.
It was in the pole vault event where Uhlin found his rhythm. He reached a height of 4.81m/15-9.25, which was just shy of his personal best of 4.90m to earn seventh place overall.
Uhlin went straight into the javelin throw, where he reached a mark of 51.73m/169-8 and came in 14th.
The Wildcat made sure to end with a bang in the men's decathlon. Uhlin made his way past most of his competitors in the 1,500-meter run and recorded a personal best time of 4:23.85 to place second.
The Arizona State transfer, Tommi Hintnaus, tied for 12th place in the women's pole vault. Hintnaus cleared a height of 4.20m/13-9.25 and won Second Team All-American honors.
"I thought Tommi did pretty well," said assistant coach LaMar Garrett. "She wasn't connecting with her take off, so she was having a little difficulty there, but I think she finished up pretty well. The one thing you always want is somebody who works really hard, and she did that. She made it fun from day one. When she was done, I thanked her for allowing me to be a part of her journey because it is a big thing to come here after being somewhere else, to put your trust and faith in somebody that you don't really know."
Receiving Second Team All-America honors after finishing 14th, Johnson finished up her K-State career with a time of 2:03.85 in the women's 800-meter semifinals.
"I thought Kassidy gave great effort," stated assistant coach Ryun Godfrey. "It was a very competitive heat and she tried to put herself into position at 400-meters and was pressing a little bit, but she was within her personal best. She has had a great season and a great career, so I couldn't be more proud of her."
In her first NCAA appearance, freshman Velecia Williams clinched 17th place in the women's long jump with a leap of 6.12m/20-1.
Fifth-year senior Wurrie Njadoe closed out her Wildcat career with a time of 23.45. She placed 21st overall in the semifinals of the 200-meter dash.
Finishing the women's 400-meter with a time of 23.45 was Shalysa Wray. The Cayman Islands native placed 23rd overall in the semifinals.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team closed out the second day at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The squad, comprised of Wray, Njadoe, junior O'Shalia Johnson and senior Alex Ferguson, ran a time of 3:37.70 and placed 22nd in the semifinals.
The Wildcats will move to day three of the competition on Friday (June 10) at Hayward Field. Junior Urte Bacianskaite will kick off the day with the 100-meter hurdles of the women's heptathlon at 3 p.m. CST.
