
K-State Alum Compete at USATF Outdoor Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Three Kansas State track and field alumni - Janee Kassanavoid, A'Keyla Mitchell and Ashley Petr - competed at the 2022 USATF Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon at Hayward Field on June 23-26.
Kassanavoid competed in the women's hammer throw event. On her second attempt, she threw to a mark of 75.59m/248-0, putting her in the top-eight and advancing her to finals.
It was in her fifth attempt where Kassanavoid had a heave of 76.04m/249-6. With that mark, Kassanavoid finished second overall and will take her place on Team USA for the World Championships in the hammer throw.
Back in May, Kassanavoid competed in the 2022 USATF Throws Festival in the hammer throw. The Lawson, Missouri native dominated the competition and threw a personal best mark of 78.00/255-11, winning the entire event out of 12 competitors.
Former Wildcat Petr competed in the women's discus throw on Friday (June 24). After fouling on her first attempt, Petr threw to 42.97m/140-11 on her second attempt. On her third and final attempt, Petr had a heave of 54.27m/178-0, putting her in ninth place, just one spot below qualifying for finals.
Mitchell started her journey on Saturday (June 25) in the women's 200-meter dash first round. The Corpus Christi, Texas native ran a personal-best time of 22.43, putting her in fifth place and allowing Mitchell to move onto the semifinals.
On Sunday (June 26), Mitchell clocked in at 22.44 to finish eighth in the semifinals and moved onto finals later in the day.
Mitchell's momentum didn't stop there. Just a few hours after running in the semifinals, Mitchell recorded another personal best time of 22.39 and placed sixth overall in the women's 200-meter finals.
The 2022 World Athletic Championships will take place on July 15-24 in Eugene, Oregon at the iconic Hayward Field. Competition will begin at 11:05 a.m., CT with Group A of the men's hammer throw.
