
Kassanavoid Captures Bronze Medal at World Championships

Kassanavoid was part of Team USA contingent who won two of the three medals
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State alumna and current volunteer coach Janee' Kassanavoid captured the bronze medal in the women's hammer throw on Sunday afternoon (July 17) at the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
The native of Lawson, Mo., Kassanavoid collected her first medal at an international competition with a throw of 74.86m/245-7. It marked the sixth consecutive meet that she has registered a throw of more than 74 meters. She entered the competition ranking fifth in the world in the event after posting a personal-best throw of 78.00m/255-11 at the U.S. Track and Field Throws Fest on May 21 at Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
Kassanavoid was part of a Team USA contingent, which won two of three medals in the women's hammer throw, as teammate Brooke Andersen won the gold medal with a toss of 78.96m/259-0. Andersen also defeated Kassanavoid for the gold medal at the U.S. Track and Field Championships on June 23. Team Canada member Camryn Rogers collected the silver medal in the competition with a mark of 75.52/247-9.
"Janee' has performed so well this season and put many check marks next to her goals this season," said K-State assistant coach Greg Watson of his protégé. "To compete with the best in the world and come out with a medal in front of your home country is a dream come true! We are so proud of her!"
Kassanavoid advanced to the finals on Friday (July 15) with an automatic qualifying mark of 74.46m/244-3, which was best of the 30 competitors in the qualification round. She narrowly defeated Andersen, who threw 74.37m/244-0 to finish second. Kassanavoid and Andersen were two of four entries to eclipse the automatic qualifying mark of 73.50/241-1 in the qualification round.
Kassanavoid has now thrown better than 73 meters in seven of eight outdoor meets this season with four of her last six throws eclipsing 75 meters. She won the silver medal at the U.S. Track and Field Championship on June 23 with a toss of 76.04/249/-5.
Kassanavoid competed for the Wildcats from 2015-18, twice earning the Big 12 title (2017, 2018) in the women's hammer throw, while she was a three-time All-American (2016, 2017, 2018) in the event, achieving First Team honors in 2017. She set the school record with a toss of 68.21m/223-09 at the 2018 Big 12 Championships.
