MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State alumna Beverly Ramos set the Puerto Rican national record in the women's marathon on Monday morning (July 18) with a time of 2:31.10 at the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Ramos, who competed for Puerto Rico in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2012 London Summer Olympics, finished 20th out of 40 runners in the marathon. Ethiopia's Gotytom Gebreslase won the event with a career-best of time of 2:18.11, while Kenya's Judith Jeptum Korir (2:18.20) and Israel's Lonah Chemtai Salpeter (2:20.18) earned the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Ramos shaved more than 5 minutes off her previous best time of the season (2:36.56 on April 10 at the NN Marathon in Rotterdam, The Netherlands), while it was more than 90 seconds faster than her previous career-high time of 2:32:43 at Siena, Italy in April 2021.
Ramos is a four-time Puerto Rican national championship in the 800, 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
A native of Trujillo, P.R., Ramos competed for the Wildcats from 2007-10, earning All-America honors on four occasions, including at least once in cross country (2009) and indoor (2010) and outdoor track and field (2008, 2010). She became the ninth Wildcat to earn All-American honors in cross country in 2009.
Another former Wildcat – Kimberly Williamson – will compete in the finals of the women's high jump on Tuesday night (July 19) at 7:40 p.m., CT at Hayward Field. The 2022 Jamaican National Champion claimed the last spot in the finals with a height of 1.90m/6-02.75 to tie for 10th place.
