MANHATTAN, Kan. - Two weeks after securing the team championship at the Wildcat Invitational, the Kansas State men's golf team heads to Winston-Salem, North Carolina for its next challenge, the Old Town Collegiate, held Monday and Tuesday at the par-70, 6,966-yard Old Town Club.
"We are looking forward to playing Old Town this week," said head coach Grant Robbins. "It's a fantastic golf course that ranks among the best in the country. If you can drive it well, you should be able to have numerous birdie opportunities. You have to be pretty precise into the greens and keep the ball below the hole as much as possible."
K-State is hoping to continue the momentum it created in the season opener as the Wildcats shot a sensational 27-under par 837 to capture the victory on their home course at Colbert Hills.
This week, Robbins will send Cooper Schultz, Will Hopkins, Nicklaus Mason, Laurenz Schiergen, and Tim Tillmanns as the five in the scoring lineup for the Wildcats.
Highlighting the lineup in the one-spot is Schultz, who is coming off his individual championship at the Wildcat Invitational. It was the first career title for the redshirt sophomore and, coincidentally, his highest finish since Schultz tied for seventh place at the Old Town Collegiate last season.
Tillmanns and Hopkins represent the veteran leadership in the lineup for K-State as the two combine for 54 career appearances.
Both got the season off to a great start in the Wildcat Invitational with Hopkins finishing a stroke off the lead in second place, and Tillmanns finishing in a tie for sixth place.
The play from Tillmanns earned him a spot in the lineup after competing as an individual in the opener.
It was a breakout performance for the sophomore Mason, who carded his career-low 54-hole score to finish in third place at 9-under par 207. He will also make his scoring lineup debut after playing in the Wildcat Invitational as an individual.
Schiergen gets the nod once again after finishing in a tie for 13th place at 1-over par 217. The sophomore has appeared in the lineup for every event throughout his young career.
The Old Town Collegiate will present an increased challenge, but a trio of Wildcats — Schultz, Hopkins, and Tillmanns — bring the experience of their sixth-place finish last season in Winston-Salem.
"We had some good rounds there last year, and I know the guys are excited to be playing there and are ready to get back to competing again," said Robbins.
Joining K-State and host-school Wake Forrest in the 11-team field is Charleston, Cincinnati, Davidson, Florida Gulf Coast, Furman, Georgia Southern, Penn State, Rutgers, and Southern Miss.
Play will begin both days with a shotgun start at 6:30 a.m. (CT), with the first two rounds set for Monday and the final round on Tuesday.
