First dual will be against North Florida on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. CT
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team opens the 2023 portion of their schedule this weekend, as the Wildcats travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for two duals, against North Florida on Saturday (January 21) and host Florida Atlantic on Sunday (January 22) at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center.
Saturday's match against the Ospreys (0-0) is set for 10 a.m. CT, while Sunday's match against the Owls (1-0) is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m., CT start.
K-State will meet North Florida for the first time ever, and face Florida Atlantic for the second time after meeting last season when the Wildcats were victorious 4-0.
K-State returns three letterwinners from the 2022 season, including senior Rosanna Maffei, junior Manami Ukita and sophomore Florentine Dekkers. Maffei is the most experienced member of the squad, posting 23 dual-match single victories since her first season. Ukita enters her third season as a Wildcat with 6 dual-match single wins, including 5 as a freshman in 2021. Dekkers went 7-8 in dual-match singles play in her first season in 2022, including a 3-3 mark at the No. 4 spot.
Three freshmen, including Maria Santos, from Cortegaça, Portugal, will compete for the first time in dual-match play. Santos joined the team at semester. The other two freshmen – Rozalia Gruszczynska and Vanesa Suarez – performed well in their first semester. Gruszczynska competed in the consolation bracket semifinals against Texas Tech's Yekaterina Dmitrichenko at the Big 12 Fall Invitational in November.
The Wildcats, who open the season with 6 straight road matches, will open the home portion of their schedule on Friday, Feb. 10 against South Dakota at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
