K-State Wins in Close Sets to Florida Atlantic

MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team earned their first win of the season on Sunday (January 22), using the momentum of winning the doubles point to post a 4-2 win against host Florida Atlantic at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center in Boca Raton, Fla.
After the Wildcats (1-1) won the doubles point, sophomore Florentine Dekkers, freshman Rozalia Gruszczynska and senior Rosanna Maffei each won in straight sets to clinch the victory over the Owls (2-1).
K-State won two of three doubles matches, including in the number one position with Gruszczynska and freshman Vanesa Suárez defeating Martina Kudelova and Amber McGinnis, 6-1. Maffei and freshman Maria Santos clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at the number three spot. Dekkers and junior Manami Ukita fell to Lexi Silna and Victoria Gomez O'Hayon, 6-2, in the number two position.
Gruszczynska earned the first singles point by defeating Lexi Silna, 6-2, 6-4, in the number 3 spot.
Dekkers claimed another point against Katerina Filip in the number two spot with a 6-0, 6-3 victory, allowing K-State to go up 3-2.
Maffei was the deciding point in the number 4 spot against Amber McGinnis as she won straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Santos' match against Victoria Gomez O'Hayon was left undecided at 1-6, 4-5 in the number 5 spot.
Suarez lost in straight set to Martina Kudelova, 6-1, 6-2, in the number 1 position.
In the number 6 spot, Ukita was defeated by Millie-Mae Matthews, 6-3, 6-2.
The Wildcats are now 2-0 all time against the Owls.
K-State will be back on the road in Palo Alto, Calif. on Friday (January 27) against Stanford (1-0) and Saturday (January 28) against the winner of Florida State/Arkansas.
