KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Powered by a round of 2-under par 69 from junior Carla Bernat, the Kansas State women's golf team is tied for fourth place after the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship on Sunday held at the par-71, 5,965-yard Cherokee Country Club.
The Wildcats, ranked 65th in the latest Golfweek rankings, are in a three-way tie for fourth place with No. 26 Pepperdine and No. 56 NC State at 3-over par 287, while Bernat is tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard.
K-State also received solid rounds from senior Haley Vargas and junior Remington Isaac, who are tied for 25th at 1-over par 72.
"The ladies stuck to the plan well today in difficult conditions," head coach Stew Burke said. "Everybody stayed patient, problem solved well, made good decisions when they got out of position and accepted bad breaks and mistakes. We're looking for more of the same mentality over the next few days."
Starting on No. 10, Bernat was even at the turn with two birdies and two bogeys. The Castellon, Spain, native then had a bogey-free second nine with birdies on Nos. 3 and 5 for her final tally. Vargas carded three birdies on the day, while Isaac had a pair.
Freshman Alenka Navarro enters Monday's second round tied for 39th place at 3-over par 74, while senior Napua Glossner is in 78th place at 13-over par 84.
No. 16 UCF leads the field at 13-under par 271, 12 strokes ahead of second-place Maryland. The Knights' Molly Smith holds a one-stroke advantage on the individual leaderboard at 5-under par 66.
The second round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship will be held on Monday with K-State's tee times off hole No. 1 beginning at 10:05 a.m. (ET). Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
