Dec 06, 2023 | Women's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head women's golf coach Stew Burke will serve as an assistant coach for the 2024 Arnold Palmer Cup, a Ryder Cup-style competition that features men's and women's collegiate golfers from the United States against their International counterparts, the Golf Coaches Association of America has announced.
The event will be played July 5-7 at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland.
"I'm truly honored to represent K-State and Team International at the Arnold Palmer Cup in Ireland," Burke said. "Mr. Palmer was a role model growing up and embraced the challenges of professional golf competing around the world to grow the game. It is truly humbling to play a small part in this incredible event to honor his legacy. Carla (Bernat) played on Team International last year, and I hope that we will have some ladies on our squad representing both sides in July."
A native of Scotland, Burke has hit the ground running during his first season with the Wildcats as he guided K-State to a 291.33 team stroke average during the first semester, its best fall stroke average since at least 2010.
The Wildcats ended the fall in style as they won the team championship at White Sands Invitational at Paradise Island, Bahamas, along with an individual winner in senior Haley Vargas. It was K-State's first team championship since winning the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational in September 2019, while it was the Wildcats' first victory away from their home course since winning the Trinity Forest Invitational in October 2017.
Vargas' individual victory was the second for a Wildcat this season as Carla Bernat took home the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational title. It marked the first time K-State had two individual winners in a season since three victories in the fall of 2017.
Named K-State's head coach on June 30, Burke returned to K-State following four seasons as head coach at Tulane. Prior to leading the Green Wave, Burke was an assistant coach at USC for parts of three seasons, while he was an assistant coach at K-State from the spring of 2014 through the fall of 2016.
While at Tulane, Burke improved the Green Waves' national Golfstat ranking more than 50 spots as he took over a program that ranked No. 113 the year prior to his arrival to a No. 62 mark during his final season.
Burke was named the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2022 after leading the Green Wave to the school's first conference championship in eight years to earn a berth into the NCAA Stillwater Regional.
The Wildcats open their spring schedule with the Puerto Rico Classic, February 4-6, held at Grand Reserve GC in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
