PEORIA, Ariz. - Noa Van Beek has risen into the top-10 at 3-under par 141 to lead the Kansas State women's golf team following two rounds of play on Sunday at the Westbrook Invitational, held on the par-72, 6,248-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club.
The Cats are tied for 10th place on a tight leaderboard at 11-over par 587. They shot an 8-over par 296 first round before closing the day with a 3-over par 291 second round.
"I'm proud of the effort by the team," head coach Kristi Knight. "There are not many shots separating the field. We have to keep believing and keep the energy up. They will have more putts fall tomorrow!"
It was a career day for Van Beek who began the event with a 2-under par 70 first round, her lowest score as a Wildcat.
The freshman from Oene, Netherlands continued to play at a high level into the afternoon to card a 1-under par 71 second round. Van Beek's day one tally of 141 is the lowest 36-hole stretch of her young career.
"Very solid day by Noa. She has put in a lot of practice time on her putting. She gave herself lots of opportunities and was able to hole a few," said Knight.
Van Beek sits just one stroke off the lead and is tied with four other golfers in sixth place. She will have a chance to capture the first individual championship since Reid Isaac in 2020.
Next on the leaderboard for K-State is Haley Vargas in a tie for 26th place at 2-over par 146. Vargas shot an even-par 72 second round after her 2-over par 74 opening round to move up eight spots and within striking distance of the top 20.
Each a stroke apart from one another is Manon Donche-Gay, Napua Glossner, and Gabriela McNelly, all of whom had improved second rounds.
Donche-Gay is tied for 50th at 6-over par 150 after shooting a 4-over par 76 first round and a 2-over par 74 second round.
Tied for 59th place at 7-over par 151 is Glossner with a 4-over par 76 first round and a 3-over par 75 second round, while McNelly shot a 6-over par 78 first round before a 2-over par 74 second round and is tied for 65th place at 8-over par 152.
No. 49 Nebraska leads the 14-team field at 10-under par 566, an 8-stroke advantage over No. 24 Ohio State and No. 44 Denver in a tie for second place. In a five-way tie for first place at 4-under par 140 is Mariana Mesones and Emma Carpenter of Minnesota, Maeva Rossi of Rutgers, Kelli Ann Strand of Nebraska, and Caley McGinty of Ohio State.
