Mavericks Rally to Defeat Cats, 7-6

Feb 28, 2023 | Baseball

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha scored four unanswered runs in the bottom of the eighth to turn a three-run deficit into a one-run lead to defeat K-State, 7-6,  on Tuesday night at Tal Anderson Field. The Cats head into the home opener 4-5 while the Mavericks earn their second win at 2-6 overall.

"We played poorly tonight. Obviously, we need to improve in many areas," said head coach Pete Hughes. "Winning programs need to expand five run leads and finish games. We fell short with that mind set and that is my responsibility."

HOW IT HAPPENED
K-State earned a pair of walks to lead off the Tuesday matchup until grabbing a quick 1-0 lead in the first with a single through the left side by Brady Day.

Haiden Hunt leveled the score in the bottom of the inning as the junior smoked the first pitch he came across deep and out into left. With a tight strike zone, Shay Hartis walked two straight batters but found his rhythm to shut down the threat 1-2-3.

Cole Johnson doubled into left field before coming around on the Cats second double of the day by Cayden Phillips to take back the lead, 2-1. The Cats stretched their lead out to three, 4-1, with an RBI single from Nick Goodwin before the shortstop drew the throw down to second allowing Dom Hughes to score on the play.

After two scoreless innings, Goodwin ended the drought with his 24th career home run with a shot into left field before the Wildcats took advantage of a fielder's choice to plate the sixth run.

Omaha capitalized on a pair of errors in the fifth frame to trim the Cats lead to three, 6-3.

Momentum shifted in the eighth inning as the Mavs scored four unanswered runs to take control of the game. The Mavs placed runners on second and third with a sac bunt before Mike Boeve, the 2022 Summit League Player of the Year, created a one-run game with single into left. Another second and third situation gave the Mavs an opportunity to use a two-run RBI single to grab the 7-6 victory.

Kai Rum (1-0) was awarded the victory after throwing two shutout innings with three walks and one strikeout while Rans Sanders was credited the save after closing the final inning. Freshman Cole Wisenbaker received the loss after allowing two earned runs through 2/3 innings.
