K-State Battles No. 18 Oklahoma State, 4-1

Freshman Vanesa Suarez won her second straight match at No. 2 singles
MANHATTAN, Kan. – A shorthanded Kansas State women's tennis team once again battled a nationally-ranked opponent before falling 4-1 to No. 18 Oklahoma State on Sunday (April 16) at the Body First Fitness Center.
The Wildcats (2-19, 0-9 Big 12) had to again submit forfeits at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to injury, but got spirited efforts from freshman Vanesa Suarez and sophomore Florentine Dekkers in singles play.
Suarez rallied from a 6-2 loss in the opening set to earn her fifth win of the season and her second straight at No. 2 singles with 6-2 and 6-4 wins in the second and third sets. Suarez partnered with junior Manami Ukita for a 3-3 tie at No. 1 doubles play against Ayumi Miyamoto and Raquel Gonzalez before the Cowgirls were able to clinch the point at No. 2 doubles.
Dekkers dropped her opening set against Kristina Novak at No. 1 singles, 7-5, before rallying to win 7-5 in the second set. She was trailing Novak 1-0 in the third set when the match was clinched.
After winning the doubles' points then singles' matches at No. 3 and No. 4, the Cowgirls (14-6, 7-2 Big 12) were able to win the match by forfeit once the No. 6 singles' match was scheduled to start.
The day began with the OSU tandem of Alana Wolfberg and Kristina Novak earning a 6-1 win over Dekkers and Rozalia Gruzeznska at No. 2 doubles. The Cowgirls won their second point with a straight set win by Sofia Rojas over junior Aleen Quamar, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles before Lucia Peyre defeated Ukita, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 5 singles.
K-State will open play against No. 7 seed Baylor (15-12, 3-6 Big 12) at the Big 12 Tennis Championships at 10 a.m., CT on Thursday, April 20 at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kan. The Bears won the regular season meeting, 4-2, in Manhattan on March 19.
