K-State to Battle Baylor in First Round of Big 12 Championship

MANHATTAN, Kan.- The No. 10 seeded K-State women's tennis team begins Big 12 Championship play Thursday (April 20) against the No. 7 seeded Baylor Bears at 10 a.m., CT at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kan. All matches are open to the public, with a $5 daily admission fee.
K-State (2-19, 0-9 Big 12) will face Baylor (15-12, 3-6 Big 12) a month after their regular season matchup in Manhattan on March 19. The winner will then face No. 2 Oklahoma (18-8, 8-1 Big 12) at the Lawrence Sports Pavillion at 12 p.m. CT.
During that last meeting against the Bears, Baylor won 4-2, with the Wildcats' two points coming from sophomore Florentine Dekkers, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 win over then No. 92 ranked Isabella Harvison, and junior Aleen Quamar, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory, against Daniella Dimitrov.
Baylor was on a 4-match winning streak, defeating TCU and three non-conference opponents, before taking a falling 6-1 to eventual Big 12 champion Texas to end the regular season. The Bears now have two ranked singles players in No. 80 Isabella Harvison and No. 103 Alina Shcherbinina.
K-State is coming off a 4-1 loss to No. 18 Oklahoma State in the regular-season finale at home on April 16. The shorthanded Wildcats battled the nationally-ranked Cowgirls, including a from-behind-victory by freshman Vanesa Suarez who defeated her third Big 12 ranked opponent, No. 117 Alana Wolfberg, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Fellow freshman Rozalia Gruszczynska has won two of her last three matches since moving to the No. 5 position on March 26 against Texas Tech. She defeated Arina Oreshchenkova of Tech, 6-3, 6-3, and Tamari Gagoshidze of Kansas, 6-2, 6-4. Her match against Raquel Gonzalez of Oklahoma State was not started.
