Suarez Named to Big 12 All-Freshman Team

Suarez is the fourth Wildcat to earn the honor since its start
MANHATTAN, Kan.- K-State women's tennis player Vanesa Suarez was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team on Friday (April 28).
Suarez is just the fourth Wildcat to earn All-Freshman honors since the honor began in 2016. Millie Stretton, named in the first year, and the first since Margot Decker and Maria Linares in 2018. She finished the 2022-23 season with a 9-14 record, including a 4-3 mark in Big 12 play, with four wins against ranked opponents.
Suarez's first win of the spring season on Feb. 19 came against No. 74 Christina Hand of Northwestern, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 10-6. She went on a two-match win streak from March 12-17, defeating back-to-back ranked opponents in No. 87 Miska Kadleckova of Iowa State, 6-2, 6-3, and Texas' No. 101 Sabina Zeynalova, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
In the last two regular season games in Manhattan on April 14-16, Suarez battled against No. 121 Carmen Corley of Oklahoma as the first set went unfinished 6-7. Against Oklahoma State's No. 117 Alana Wolfberg she came back after the first set and was victorious in three, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Suarez was nearing a defeat of No. 103 Alina Shcherbinina of Baylor at the Big 12 Championship on April 20 before the match went unfinished at 6-3, 5-4.
Others on the All-Freshman team include Kansas' Heike Janse Van Vuuren, Julia Garcia Ruiz of Oklahoma, Lucia Peyre from Oklahoma State and Texas' Nicole Khirin and Nicole Rivkin.
