O’Neill Concludes Season in NCAA Championship
May 28, 2023 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Kansas State junior men's golfer Luke O'Neill carded a 4-over par 74 on Sunday during his final round of the 2023 NCAA Championship held at the par-70, 7.289-yard Grayhawk Golf Club.
O'Neill did not survive the 54-hole cut as he tied for 94th place at 11-over par 221.
"I'm really proud of Luke," head coach Grant Robbins said. "I thought he played much better than his score showed. It seemed like each round it was one or two swings that really cost him. The golf course is playing really tough, especially later in the day, and you have to be so precise on both your drives and approaches. All in all, it was a great experience and something Luke will learn from."
A product of Connemara, Ireland, O'Neill was the fifth Wildcat to ever compete in the NCAA Championship and the first since current PGA TOUR member Robert Streb did so in 2006. O'Neill finished his junior campaign with a 71.64 stroke average to rank sixth in school history, while he enters his senior campaign third in school history with a 72.75 career average.
O'Neill was part of a team that set a school record with a team stroke average of 281.47, nearly seven shots per round better than the previous low mark of 288.24 put together by last year's squad. K-State also tied for second in school history in both team victories (4) and top-five finishes (7), while they had eight of the top-20 team rounds and seven of the top-25 team 54-hole scores in school history.
"I'm really proud of what Luke and the entire team accomplished this season," Robbins said. "This season shows what this program can be. I'm really excited for the future."
