K-State 1v8+ Wins Big 12 Boat of the Week Award
May 03, 2023 | Rowing
This is the Wildcats first award since the 2021 season
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's rowing 1v8+ was named the Big 12's Boat of the Week on Wednesday (May 3) after a dominating performance during the Sunflower Showdown on April 29.
"Our athletes have worked hard all season with how they have been training and preparing. They did what they needed to, leading up to this race, to be ready. On race day, they performed at a high level, which led to a race each one of them should feel good about," head coach Patrick Sweeney said. "We're proud of them earning this recognition, and we're looking forward to seeing how they build from this weekend to finish the season strong."
As the first race of the day, the 1v8+ set the tone for the Sunflower Showdown winning with a time of 6:45.7. The crew beat Kansas by almost eight seconds. The race earned the Wildcats nine points. The team went on to win two more races in the 2v8+ and the 3v8+ for 17 points overall.
"This race was the first time we left it all out on the water. We pushed ourselves and hit the numbers that that we knew we could. Our earlier races we were a little scared of what we could do but this one we really pushed ourselves all the way through," sophomore Rachel Harman said. "We've seen Tennessee, Alabama, Texas getting boats of the week, and this really boosts our confidence going into Big 12s next week."
"We're all excited. Our practices have been going really well, Sweeney is really positive, and the whole boat is really coming together well."
The boat consisted of sophomore coxswain Paige Fox, Rachel Harman, sophomores Jordan Girkin, Anna Ryan, Madison Koller, junior Patricia Hokanson, senior Madison Jensen, freshman Bianca Wollmeister and junior Idallis Shaffer.
"This race felt really strong, and powerful as a boat. I had never felt that way or that good after a race, knowing that we had just done something that hard together and fully committed," Hokanson said. "It feels special. Our hard work is honored and valued by not only our team but the entire Big 12, they recognize how much work we have put in to secure that win. I'm excited to see where all our hard work has brought us and where we get to finish out."
This award comes as the Wildcats prepare for a week off from competing before traveling to Austin, Texas on May 14 to compete in the Big 12 Championship.
