K-State Continues Fall Slate in New Mexico

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team looks to use momentum from a season-opening victory last week, as the Wildcats compete in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday, at the par-72, 7,546-yard UNM Golf Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
K-State is coming off a victory in its home tournament, the Wildcat Invitational, where the Cats carded a 17-under par 847 to earn their fifth team win since the beginning of last season.
"We are looking forward to competing in New Mexico this week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It is a strong field and at a golf course that has hosted national championships and numerous other top amateur events. The course is very long, and with the altitude we have to adjust our yardages pretty quickly. It will be a strong challenge for us and a great opportunity to see how we stack up against some of the best teams in the country early in the year. I know the guys are excited about it."
The Wildcats will use a new lineup this week, which features five players that finished in the top 11 at the Wildcat Invitational in Cooper Schultz, Nicklaus Mason, Luke O'Neill, Alex Lindstrom and JP Roller. All five players were among 15 competitors that finished under par at Colbert Hills last week.
Lindstrom, a native of Halmstad, Sweden, who transferred to K-State from Hutchinson Community College, played as an individual last week and finished in second place at 10-under par 206 thanks to two sub-70 rounds to conclude the event.
Lindstrom finished two shots ahead of Schultz, as the junior from Andover, Kansas, tied for third place at 8-under par 208, while O'Neill was sixth at 6-under par 210, Mason was eighth at 3-under par 213 and Roller, a transfer from Texas Tech, tied for 11th at 1-under par 215.
O'Neill, a native from Connemara, Ireland, enters the week with a 72.66 career stroke average to rank third in school history, while his 11 top-10 finishes are tied for ninth.
The Wildcats are among a stacked field of 20 teams in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate as they are one of 10 schools that qualified for NCAA Regionals a year ago, while five teams in the field advanced to the NCAA Championship. The entire field at UNM Golf Course includes BYU, Colorado, Hawai'i, K-State, Long Beach State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, San Diego, San Diego State, San Francisco, Santa Clara, TCU, Texas Tech, UC Santa Barbara, UNLV, USC, Utah Tech, UTEP, UTSA and Wyoming.
This is the first time ever that K-State will play as a team at UNM Golf Course. The only time a Wildcat played in Albuquerque was when Richard Laing qualified for the 1992 NCAA Championship.
