ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Kansas State men's golf team carded one of the eight under-par rounds among the 20-team field during a challenging final round of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Tuesday, moving up one spot to finish in eighth place at the par-72, 7,546-yard UNM Golf Course.
K-State turned in a score of 2-under par 286 on Tuesday to give the Cats a final 54-hole score of 3-under par 861, one shot ahead of USC. The Wildcats also finished ahead of Colorado, San Diego and TCU, each of which made the postseason a year ago.
"I thought we played pretty well today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The course was set up pretty tough with the rough and hole locations, and I felt like everyone played solid. We had a few too many three-putts, and we just gave away too many shots the first couple of rounds. Overall, this was a good experience for us. It was good to go up against a strong field on a difficult golf course this early in the season. There were a lot of positives, but it also showed a lot of areas in which we need to improve."
The low round of the day was turned in by junior Nicklaus Mason with a 4-under par 68. The Shawnee, Kansas, product moved 32 spots up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 24th place at 1-under par 215.
Senior Luke O'Neill was the top finisher for the Wildcats as he tied for 12th place at 5-under par 211. Junior Cooper Schultz also finished under par at 2-under 214, tying for 18th place. He moved up one spot during the final round thanks to a score of even-par 72.
Transfers Alex Lindstrom and JP Roller also improved their position during the final round. Lindstrom, who joined the Wildcats from Hutchinson Community College, moved up three spots to a tie for 68th at 8-over par 224. Roller, who came to K-State from Texas Tech, improved 10 spots to a tie for 86th place at 12-over par 228 after a solid outing of 1-over par 73 during the final round.
Host school New Mexico came from behind to earn the team victory at 29-under par 835, three shots ahead of Texas Tech, which held the 36-hole lead. San Diego State's Tyler Kowack came from sixth place to win the event on the final day with a 54-hole score of 11-under par 205, one shot ahead of a pair of Texas Tech players.
Next action for K-State comes October 9-11, when the Wildcats compete in the Big 12 Match Play Championship at Houston Oaks Golf Course in Houston, Texas.
