K-State Returns to Houston Oaks for Big 12 Match Play
Oct 08, 2023 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team steps away from stroke play this week to participate in the annual Big 12 Match Play Championship, Monday through Wednesday, at the par-71, 7,007-yard Houston Oaks GC in Hockley, Texas.
This is the fifth edition of Big 12 Match Play with all five events being played at Houston Oaks. Last season, K-State finished sixth overall but second in Pool A as it recorded victories over Texas and Iowa State and ties with Texas Tech and Kansas.
"The guys are excited for match play this week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "I think if you ask any of them, they would say this is the one event they enjoy the most throughout the year. It's a true team event that is obviously a lot different than what we play most of the year. It's a great opportunity to compete head-to-head against some of the best teams in the country, and to play at a place like Houston Oaks makes it really special. We are looking forward to a fun week."
The Wildcats will send six golfers to Houston Oaks in Luke O'Neill, Nicklaus Mason, Cooper Schultz, Alex Lindstrom, JP Roller and Ben Stoller with five players selected to compete in each round.
Last year, Schultz picked up four victories, while O'Neill won three matches and tied another. Mason also picked up a pair of wins.
This year's version of the Big 12 Match Play will look different as the conference welcomes new members in BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston. During pool play, the Wildcats will take on BYU on Monday morning and Cincinnati during the afternoon, while Tuesday morning sees K-State face Texas.
An individual match victory awards that team with one point. An individual match that remains tied after 18 holes awards each team with a half point. Once all individual matches are completed within a team match, the team with the greater point total will
receive three points, while the losing team receives zero points. If the match is tied at the end of all five individual matches (2.5 points to 2.5 points), both teams receive one point.
Bracket play begins on Wednesday morning as teams will be matched up against a team with the same placing in another pool, while Wednesday afternoon is the championship round.
