K-State Moves Up One Spot on Sunday

NORMAN, Okla. – Backed by rounds of 2-under par 68 by junior Gabriela McNelly and freshman Alenka Navarro, the Kansas State women's golf team carded a 2-under par 278 on Sunday to move up one spot into a tie for fifth place during the second round of the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club.
The Wildcats' score of 278 was the second lowest in school history and one stroke shy of the school record of 277 during the first round of the 2019 Bruzzy Challenge. K-State is at 2-over par 562 for the tournament, tied with host-school Oklahoma and just two shots away from a tie for third place.
"Today was a good step forward," head coach Stew Burke said. "We got off to a bit of a slow start, but we still managed to hang in there through the middle of the round. It's always a little disappointing to drop a couple of shots close to the end. However, you can never be upset with an under-par round on a difficult golf course in tough conditions. The goal remains the same for tomorrow – stick to the game plan, good mental approach and close a little stronger."
McNelly's round of 68 was a career low, bettering 72s she shot each of the last two years. Navarro's under-par round comes on the heels of an even-par 70 in her first collegiate round on Saturday. Navarro enters the final round tied for 13th place at 2-under par 138, while McNelley is tied for 27th at 2-over par 142.
Senior Haley Vargas and freshman Julia Ballester Barrio are tied for 41st place at 4-over par 144, while junior transfer Carla Bernat is tied for 51st place at 5-over par 145. Both Ballester Barrio and Bernat carded rounds of 1-over par 71 on Sunday.
Defending national champion Wake Forest leads the field by a wide margin at 20-under par 540, 14 shots ahead of second-place Virginia Tech. Florida State and Houston are tied for third place at even-par 560.
Maddison Hinson-Tolchard of Oklahoma State holds the individual lead at 8-under par 132, one shot ahead of two players tied for second place.
Tee times for the final round of the Schooner Fall Classic begin at 8:30 a.m. Live results can be followed at www.GolfGenius.com.
