FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Kansas State men's golf team rose one spot and the women's squad fell two positions as both teams are in fifth place following the second round of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday at the par-72 Blessings Golf Club.
The K-State men, which carded a round of 11-over par 299, enters the final round with a 36-hole score of 24-over par 600, leading a pack of four teams that are within two strokes of each other. Senior Kobe Valociek leads the Wildcats after rising six spots on Tuesday into a tie for sixth place at 1-over par 145. He was one of only 12 competitors among the 54-player field to shoot even par or better during a windy second round as he came in at even-par 72 on the day.
"Today was a lot tougher with the wind – it was moving around a lot, which made it difficult choosing the right club at times," men's head coach Grant Robbins said. "I thought we hit a lot of quality shots, but the little mistakes here can really cost you. I like the way we are competing. We just have to keep after it and get something going in the final round."
The Wildcat women are in the middle of a bunched-up leaderboard as they are at 28-over par 604, just two shots away from fourth-place Louisville and two shots in front of sixth-place LSU. K-State is led by senior Carla Bernat, who remains in a tie for second place with a 36-hole score of 3-under par 141 following a second-round total of 1-over par 73. Like Valociek, she turned in one of the better scores of the day as she was one of only seven women to card a 73 or better during the second round.
"The course ate us up," women's head coach Stew Burke said. "We did very few things well, but we are looking to reset and come back stronger tomorrow. We still have a good chance to move up the leaderboard although we are a little more bunched up with other teams than we previously were. Tomorrow is a new and important day to finish strong."
Nicklaus Mason went 3-over par 75 on Tuesday as he enters the final round tied for 19th place at 5-over par 149. Ian McCrary also turned in a second-round score of 75 to reside in a tie for 35th place at 8-over par 152. Cooper Schultz is two shots back following a second-straight round of 5-over par 77 on Tuesday, and he enters Wednesday's final round in 37th place. JP Roller is tied for 45th place with a 36-hole score of 14-over par 158.
On the women's side, sophomore Alenka Navarro and junior Noa van Beek are tied for 31st place at 10-over par 154, one shot ahead of freshman Nanami Nakashima, who is tied for 35th place. Senior Sophie Bert is in 54th place at 28-over par 172.
The men's standings are paced by LSU, which holds a two-shot lead over Mississippi State with a 36-hole score of 6-over par 582. The Tigers also have the top individual in Gunnlaugur Arni Sveinsson, who is at 6-under par 138 to lead by three strokes entering the final round.
Homestanding Arkansas holds a dominating 22-shot lead on the women's side at 4-under par 572, while BYU is in second place at 18-over par 594 and Mississippi State is in third place at 20-over par 596. Arkansas' Maria Jose Marin continues to pace the women's individual leaderboard at 6-under par 138, while another Razorback, Reagan Zibilski, is tied with Bernat for second place.
The Kansas State men's golf team begins the final round of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational with a 9:20 a.m. tee time off the first hole, while the women's squad is the very next group at 9:35 a.m.
