K-State in Contention Through Two Rounds in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. – Backed by a second-round total of 11-under par 273 and boasting all five members of the scoring lineup in the top 15, the Kansas State men's golf team is in second place following 36 holes of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Monday at the par-71, 7,239-yard Falls Course of Magnolia Grove.
The Wildcats hold a two-round total of 11-under par 557, eight shots back of homesteading South Alabama and eight shots clear of third-place Delaware. The second-round total of 273 was K-State's lowest team round of the season and tied for the 10th-lowest round in school history. Kansas State was able to improve five spots up the leaderboard in the afternoon after carding an even-par round in the morning.
"Overall, it was a very good day for us," said head coach Grant Robbins. "We got off to a slow start but began to get some things going the last few holes of the first round, and that momentum definitely carried over into round two. The wind picked up in the afternoon, and we did a really good job of hitting our spots, staying patient and taking advantage of the par 5s. The conditions should be similar tomorrow, so the game plan will stay the same, which is to keep playing one shot at a time, and hopefully we can make a run at it."
All six Wildcats competing in the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate are at even or under par with four players tied for seventh place at 2-under par 140 in sophomore Fionn Dobbin, freshman Oliver Toyer, senior Shea Harmeson and senior JP Roller, the latter of which is competing as an individual.
Following an up-and-down first 18 holes in which he recorded an eagle on the par-5 10th but finished at 2-over par to reside in a tie for 41st place, Dobbin came back with an afternoon round of 4-under par 67 with five birdies. It was the lowest round of his collegiate career as the Lisburn, Northern Ireland, native edged his previous best round of 68 in his first-career round last year at the Southern Dunes Collegiate.
Toyer, a product of Cambridgeshire, England, also tallied a career-best round as the freshman posted a first-round total of 3-under par 68 with five birdies. Harmeson recorded back-to-back rounds of 1-under par 70, including an afternoon 18 in which he was able to bounce back from a 1-over par score through 15 holes by birdieing two of his final three. Roller matched Toyer's first-round total with four birdies as he is the top player in the field competing solely as an individual.
Freshman Ville Virkkala is one shot back of those four players in a tie for 12th place at 1-under par 141. The Espoo, Finland, native had a stellar afternoon, recording a bogey-free round of 3-under par 68, his sixth round in red figures this season.
Senior Alex Lindstrom bounced back from a score of 3-over par 74 in the morning to turn in a total of 3-under par 68 in the afternoon. He enters Tuesday's final round tied for 15th place at even par.
South Alabama's Hugo Thyr holds a one-shot advantage on the individual leaderboard over New Orleans' Tom Watson at 11-under par 131.
The final round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate is set for an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start on Tuesday. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd.
