MOBILE, Ala. – The Kansas State men's golf team turned in one of the best 54-hole scores in school history thanks to a final-round total of 10-under par on Tuesday, as the Wildcats finished in second place in the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate held at the par-71, 7,239-yard Falls Course of Magnolia Grove.
K-State concluded the event with a 54-hole score of 21-under par 831 after posting a 274 over the final 18 holes. It tied for the eighth-lowest three-round total in school history and was the lowest since April 2023 when K-State recorded an 828 at the Tiger Collegiate Invitational.
This was the third time this season K-State recorded a first- or second-place finish after winning the season-opening Wildcat Invitational and finishing second in the Git-R-Done Invitational in September. It is the first time since the 2022-23 season that K-State earned at least three first- or second-place showings when that squad recorded five.
"I am really proud of how we competed this week," said head coach Grant Robbins, whose team finished five shots back of homestanding South Alabama for the team title. "The guys showed a tremendous amount of grit, especially after the slow start yesterday. Hats off to South Alabama – they played some exceptional golf this week. We knew we were going to have to be perfect today to have a chance, but we made a few too many mistakes and weren't quite able to catch them."
K-State finished first in the 13-team field in fewest bogeys (36), tied for first in par-4 scoring (+2) and ranked second in both total birdies (59) and par-5 scoring (-27).
All five members of the scoring lineup finished at even or under par, which marked the first time accomplishing that feat since winning the Colleton River Collegiate. Additionally, the Wildcats had four players finish in the top 10 in seniors Shea Harmeson, JP Roller and Alex Lindstrom in addition to freshman Ville Virkkala.
"I am really proud of the overall team effort as every player contributed, and having that many players in the top 10 is very encouraging," Robbins said.
Harmeson finished in second place, and both Virkkala and Roller tied for third place as it was the first time having multiple players finish in the top three since the Wildcat Invitational in September 2024 and the first time away from Colbert Hills since Jeremy Gandon and Jacob Eklund finished first and second, respectively, in the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular in March 2019.
A native of Traverse City, Michigan, Harmeson rose five spots during the final round thanks to a score of 5-under par 66 as he finished with a 54-hole score of 7-under par 206. He tied his collegiate low round originally produced three times over the previous two seasons while playing at Saginaw Valley State, while his 54-hole score was a career best by two shots. Harmeson went bogey free on Tuesday and finished out his round in resounding fashion by birdieing three of his final four holes.
Virkkala was K-State's biggest mover of the day, rising nine spots and finishing at 5-under par 208. The Espoo, Finland, native posted a final-round score of 4-under par 68, working around a double-bogey on No. 7 with an eagle on the very next hole in addition to five birdies. His three-round total was four shots better than his previous season best of 212 at The Wohali in mid-September. He now has five rounds in the 60s this season to rank second on the team.
Competing as an individual, Roller set a new career best with his 54-hole score of 5-under par 208. The sixth-year senior topped his previous best of 210 in April 2021 at the DBU Men's Classic while playing for Texas Tech. The Jenks, Oklahoma, native was able to reach that mark by equaling his first-round total of 3-under par 68 on Tuesday.
Lindstrom made a seven-spot improvement during the final round to tie for eighth place at 3-under par 210 following his second-consecutive round of 3-under par 68. The team leader with six rounds in the 60s this season, Lindstrom notched his third top-10 finish this season and fourth of his career.
Freshman Oliver Toyer and sophomore Fionn Dobbin tied for 18th place at even-par 213 after both carded final-round totals of 2-over par 73. It was the second time in his nine starts this season that Toyer finished a 54-hole event at even or under par, while Dobbin did so for the third time, including the second-straight outing.
South Alabama's Hugo Thyr earned the individual title with a seven-shot victory at 14-under par 199.
Next action for Kansas State is April 13 and 14 when the Wildcats compete in the Mossy Oak Collegiate held at Mossy Oak GC in West Point, Mississippi.
