Hawkins’ Double-Double Carries K-State Past Longwood, 80-64

Nov 25, 2024 | Men's Basketball

The senior posted game-highs in points (19) and rebounds (10) in helping the Wildcats to victory.

ST. THOMAS, U.S.V.I. – Senior Coleman Hawkins collected his first double-double in a Wildcat uniform with game-highs in both points (19) and rebounds (10), as Kansas State defeated Longwood, 80-64, in the third-place game of the 25th annual Paradise Jam on Monday night before 2,225 fans at the Elridge Wilburn Blake Sports and Fitness Center.

Hawkins, who also tallied 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks, propelled a K-State offense that set season highs for field goal percentage (58.9) and 3-point field goal percentage (55.0) in ending the Paradise Jam on a winning note. He knocked down 5 of the Wildcats' 11 made 3-point field goals while connecting on 7-of-10 from the field. It marked his seventh career double-double.

Hawkins was joined in double figures by junior Brendan Hausen (16 points), junior Dug McDaniel (11 points) and senior David N'Guessan (10 points). N'Guessan has now scored in double figures in 8 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Hawkins was named to the Paradise Jam All-Tournament Team after averaging 13.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.7 blocks in 34.3 minutes in the 3-game tournament.

Longwood (6-2), which has been the best program in the Big South Conference the past 3 seasons, with 67 wins and 2 NCAA Tournament appearances, gave K-State (5-2) a battle for much of the first half before Hawkins' first 3-pointer helped ignite a 22-11 run that carried the Wildcats to a 44-36 halftime advantage. The senior had 3 triples in the pivotal run.

The Lancers got to within 44-39 moments into the second half but an 8-2 run capped by a dunk from N'Guessan pushed the lead to double figures and forced a timeout with 16:19 to play. The advantage grew to 62-47 after a 3-pointer from junior C.J. Jones at the first media timeout.

A 6-0 run got Longwood to within 62-53 near the midway point of the second half, but a Hausen 3-pointer keyed a 16-4 K-State run that pushed the lead to its largest at 78-57 with just over 5 minutes to play. Sophomore Macaleab Rich had 8 points in the stretch as the Wildcats pounded the paint.

K-State connected on a season-best 58.9 percent (33-of-56) from the field, including 55 percent (11-of-20) from 3-point range, while scoring half of its points in the paint (40). The 11 triples were the second-most this season and the third time that the Wildcats have hit on double-digit 3-pointers. Despite turning the ball over 18 times, they allowed just 5 points off those miscues.

Hawkins posted team-highs in points (19), rebounds (10) and blocks (2) while was second with 5 assists and 2 steals in 35 minutes of action. His 5 made 3-pointers were one shy of his career-high of 6 set while playing at Illinois in 2024. It marked his third double-digit scoring game this season and was the second time he pulled down double-digit rebounds in the past 4 games.

Hausen scored his 16 points on 6-of-8 field goals, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, marking his third straight double-digit scoring game and fifth overall this season. McDaniel posted his 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go with team-highs in both assists (6) and steals (4). N'Guessan managed double-digit points for the eighth straight game with 10 points on 5-of-7 field goals.

Defensively, K-State held Longwood to 41.4 percent (24-of-58) shooting from the field, including just 13.3 percent (2-of-15) from 3-point range. The Lancers had just 8 assists on 24 made field goals with 38 of their 64 points coming in the paint.

Three Lancers scored in double figures, including a team-high 15 points from senior Kyrell Luc, while sophomore Colby Garland and senior Johan Nziemi had 13 and 11 points, respectively.

K-State returns home on Sunday, Dec. 1 when the Wildcats play host to UAPB (1-6) at 1 p.m., CT in the first game of a men's and women's doubleheader at Bramlage Coliseum. Tickets are available online at kstatesports.com/tickets as well as by calling the ticket office at (800) 221.CATS.

HEAD COACH JEROME TANG
On his team's response after last night's disappointing loss…
"It's just a blessing to watch our guys mature, grow and come together. It's not a microwave thing. It's going to take some time. We learned yesterday about how to close out the first half and we closed this half the right way against what I think is an NCAA Tournament team in Longwood. And with the first five minutes of the second half, we won by five points. So, we built on the lead, right? And then, you know, we got a little sloppy a couple times. We had two spurts there, one in the first half, one in the second half, where we turned the ball over five times in a five-minute span, because we got a little loose. But that's going to be the growth and maturity part that's going to take place. We're going to be able to teach it from film. But guys are growing in their confidence. We're learning each other. We have got a ways to go, but I like this group, and you know, thankful for our fans who came down. We had the most fans, by far of anybody, and so thankful that they came down to support our team."

On Coleman Hawkins' ability to shoot 3-pointers…
"Oh, man. It opens up everything for everybody. And I know his nature is that he wants to get his teammates involved. But at this point in his career and where we're at, we need him to be a guy who will put up shots and make them obviously but put them up. The more he puts him up, the more he does this. Now teams are going to have to adjust, and he'll create other things for other people. And so, thankful he's trusting us, and he's growing."

On Hawkins' defensive ability…
"I thought he was the best defender in the tournament. The first game he took their leading scorer out. Second game, their main big was 0-of-8 from the field with him guarding him. Tonight, the same thing, the guy (Michael Christmas) he was guarding with 0-of-8 from the field. He just took him out of the game completely. He did a great job defensively. And he's like Deion Sanders, you know, you put him on an island over there, prime, and you say, hey, everybody else is in zone, but you're in man. And he just takes the receiver away. And so, it's a blessing to have him."

On the progress that Macaleab Rich is making…
"Oh man, I'm so proud of Buddy. He's gotten in shape, and he's taking care of himself off the court, which allowed him to play extended, extended periods of time, because normally, two hard minutes, and we got to get him out because he's winded, but he wasn't tired and didn't cramp. And, and then now he could get in the offensive rhythm, right? And, and then once he gets going, man, he's hard to stop. And that just gives us another weapon. And you know, when you got your two, your fours and fives over that can stretch the floor, like Coleman can, and like Achor can and then you've got a guy like him that you could post at times or put him in those type of situations. Now, you create a lot of problems for the other team. So, I'm very proud of Buddy."

FIRST HALF
The teams got off to fast starts with both shooting better than 60 percent from the field, as K-State led 11-8 at the first media timeout with 4 assists on 5 made field goals. However, fouls and turnovers started to pick up for the Wildcats, as Longwood tied the game at 13-all just after the second media timeout with 11:39 to play.

The Lancers took advantage of foul problems, using a 10-4 run to take a 25-22 lead at the 7:36 mark. A 3-pointer by senior Coleman Hawkins started a run of 3 Wildcat triples before the final media timeout, as they took a 33-30 lead with 3:55 before halftime. Hawkins had a pair of 3-pointers in the 11-5 run, along with junior Brendan Hausen.

After Longwood closed to 33-32 on a pair of free throws, K-State responded with 10 of the next 12 points to push ahead 43-34 and force a timeout with 1:27 remaining. Junior Dug McDaniel had 5 points in the run, along with a third 3-pointer from Hawkins and tip-in by senior David N'Guessan.

A free throw from Hausen and a jumper by the Lancers closed the scoring at 44-36 at the break.

K-State shot 54.5 percent (18-of-33) from the field in the first half, including 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from 3-point range. Hawkins and Hausen had 11 points each, combining for 5 of the 7 3-pointers.

SECOND HALF
Longwood cut the lead to 44-39 moments into the second half before K-State responded with 8 of the next 10 points to push the advantage to 52-41 and force a timeout with 16:19 remaining.

The lead grew to 62-47 after junior C.J. Jones converted a 3-pointer right before the media timeout with 13:28 to play. However, the Lancers continued to battle, closing the deficit to 62-53 after scoring 6 straight points near the midway point of the second half.

Hausen broke the scoring drought with the team's 10th 3-pointer of the night to extend the lead back to double figures at 65-53. The 3-pointer by Hausen seemed to spark the Wildcats, as they scored 14 of the next 16 points to push the lead above 20 at 76-55 with 5:07 left. Sophomore Macaleab Rich was responsible for 8 points in the stretch.

The lead would go no closer than the 80-64 final score.
K-State connected on 62.5 percent (15-of-24), including 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from 3-point range, with 20 of its 36 second-half points coming in the paint. Seven different players registered points, including 8 points each from Hawkins and Rich.
