LA QUINTA, Calif. – Earning victories over eight teams ranked in the top 50, the Kansas State men's golf team carded a score of 2-under par 282 on Wednesday as the Wildcats tied for fifth place among the 24-team field following final-round play of The Prestige held at the par-71, 7,129-yard Norman Course at PGA WEST.
The Wildcats recorded a 54-hole score of 12-under par 840, which was their lowest of the year and the 14th-lowest in school history. Kansas State, which entered the event ranked No. 72 in the country, earned victories over No. 23 Oregon, No. 24 Chattanooga, No. 27 Baylor, No. 33 UCLA, No. 36 SMU, No. 38 Northwestern, No. 41 Loyola Marymount and No. 47 Louisville in addition to a tie with No. 26 Duke.
"It was a really solid week for us," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The last couple of days weren't always pretty, but the guys did a great job of battling and grinding out some solid rounds. This was a big-time field and shows what we are capable of. We still have a lot of work to do but this is definitely a confidence boost going forward."
The Wildcats received a pair of top-15 showings from juniors Nicklaus Mason and Cooper Schultz as the Kansas-native duo tied for 11th place at 6-under par 207. It was the second lowest 54-hole score in Mason's career as the Shawnee product finished just one shot from tying his career low of 206 at last year's Colleton River Collegiate.
A native of Andover, Schultz matched his first-round score with a 4-under par 67 on Wednesday to move 14 spots up the leaderboard on the final day. Schultz was able to make the jump thanks to a bogey-free and 3-under par back 9.
"I'm really proud of Cooper and Nick. They were both rock solid the entire way and made some clutch birdies for us on the last couple of holes today," Robbins said.
Junior JP Roller finished in a tie for 53rd place at 2-over par 215, tied for his second best 54-hole score this season. Senior Luke O'Neill concluded the event at 4-over par 217 and in a tie for 66th place, while sophomore Alex Lindstrom was one shot back and in a tie for 72nd place.
Playing in a separate individual tournament at The Golf Club at Terra Lago, junior Ian McCrary tied for 35th place at 6-over par 222.
Texas Tech earned the team title going away with a 54-hole score of 33-under par 819, 12 shots ahead of second-place Kansas. The Jayhawks' Cecil Belisle earned the individual title by carding a 54-hole score of 13-under par 200.
Kansas State will take a week off before its next tournament, the Colleton River Collegiate, held March 4 and 5 at Colleton River GC in Bluffton, S.C.
