Wildcats to Face Familiar Course, Opponents in Westbrook Invitational

Feb 23, 2024 | Women's Golf

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off a nearly three-week stretch of practice after its initial spring event, the Kansas State women's golf team steps back into competition for two-straight events in the state of Arizona beginning with the Westbrook Invitational, Sunday and Monday, at the par-72, 6,248-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club in Peoria, Arizona.

An event that is frequent on K-State's schedule, this will be the 11th time since 2012 that the Wildcats are a part of the field as they have finished in the top five of this event three times, including a victory in 2017. Additionally, four of the program's top six 54-hole scores have come at the Westbrook Invitational with each of those performances being put together since 2016.

In addition to the familiar surroundings, K-State – which checks in at No. 58 in the latest NCAA Rankings – is set to face teams that are right around the Wildcats in the rankings in addition to regional rivalries. The entire field includes No. 43 Colorado State, Iowa, No. 40 Kansas, No. 52 Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Florida, No. 53 Oklahoma, Rutgers, Sam Houston, No. 32 South Florida, UNC Wilmington and host-school Wisconsin.

"It's rivalry week for us in the desert," first-year head coach Stew Burke said. "There's added incentive to play well as we will be competing against KU, Mizzou and Nebraska. We've had a good week of practice at home, and the ladies are ready to compete and play some desert golf. We will need to continue our strong start to the spring season, put three great rounds together and see where it adds up at the end of the week."

For the first time this season, Kansas State will utilize the lineup of junior Carla Bernat, sophomore Noa van Beek, seniors Napua Glossner and Haley Vargas, as well as freshman Alenka Navarro.

Bernat, a native of Castellon, Spain, leads the team with a 70.58 stroke average as she ranks No. 57 in the latest NCAA Individual Rankings. Additionally, Bernat is closing in on the top 30 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), checking in at No. 33 in the latest results that were released on Wednesday. Bernat has a pair of top-five finishes this season, including a tie for third place in the Wildcats' latest event, the Puerto Rico Classic.

van Beek will be a part of the scoring lineup for a third-straight event, as the Oene, Netherlands, native holds a 75.00 stroke average this year thanks in part to a tie for eighth place in the White Sands Invitational to close out the fall slate.

Navarro, who hails from Mexico City, has been part of the scoring lineup for all six events and ranks second on the team with a 73.07 stroke average.

Vargas, who holds a 74.40 stroke average, is looking to recapture the rounds she put forth in the White Sands Invitational to close the fall season when she won the event at 1-over par 217. Glossner, from San Diego, California, is seeing time in her third event this season and second as a member of the scoring lineup.

A shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (MT) will begin play both days with the first 36 holes being played Sunday and the final round conducted on Monday. Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
