PEORIA, Ariz. – The Kansas State women's golf team carded an 11-under par 277 during the second round of the Westbrook Invitational on Sunday to tie the program record, as the Wildcats moved five spots up the leaderboard into a tie for third place at the par-72, 6,248-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club.
The Wildcats were in eighth place following a 5-under par 283 in Sunday morning's first round, but a collective 18 birdies and an eagle in the afternoon tied the school record originally set during the first round of the Bruzzy Challenge on April 1, 2019. K-State enters the final round at 16-under par 560.
"The ladies did a great job sticking to their game plan today," first-year head coach Stew Burke said. "We knew there were birdies out there, and we just had to be patient early on, let them come to us and not force anything. It was great to have all five players counting in the round right up until the end, which gave us the best chance to post a low score."
The Wildcats were led on Sunday by junior Carla Bernat, who is atop the individual leaderboard at 10-under par 134 following rounds of 68 and 66. Her second-round score of 6-under par 66 is tied for the fourth-lowest round in school history and is the lowest since Niamh McSherry also tallied a 66 during the first round of the Dick McGuire Invitational on April 11, 2021.
Bernat, a native of Castellon, Spain, carded 12 birdies and just two bogeys on the day, and she enters Monday's final round with a one-shot lead over Kansas' Lily Hurst.
Senior Haley Vargas put together a pair of under-par rounds, going 1-under par 71 in the morning before turning in a 3-under par 69 in the afternoon, a round that included a bogey-free front 9. A product of Lubbock, Texas, Vargas is tied for 22nd place at 4-under par 140.
Freshman Alenka Navarro is at 1-under par 143 thanks to a 1-under par 71 showing in the afternoon. The Mexico City product enters the final round tied for 39th place. One shot behind Navarro and in a tie for 47th place is sophomore Noa van Beek, who went 1-over par in the morning and 1-under par in the afternoon.
Senior Napua Glossner carded a 2-over par 146 on the day – which included an even par morning round – and she is tied for 59th.
Kansas leads the field at 30-under par 546, and the Jayhawks hold an eight-shot lead over second-place Oklahoma.
"We had some awesome support from not only our host families but also local K-State alumni," Burke said. "It will be important that we get off to a good start tomorrow and we keep the hammer down through all 18 holes to give ourselves the best chance to catch the leaders."
The final round of the Westbrook Invitational will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (MT) on Monday morning. Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
