K-State Finishes Ninth in Puerto Rico

Feb 06, 2024 | Women's Golf

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Kansas State women's golf team put together a final-round score of 2-over par 290 on Tuesday to conclude its first event of the spring, the Puerto Rico Classic, in ninth place at the par-72, 6,305-yard Grand Reserve Golf Club.

K-State, which saw its score improve by two shots in each of the final two rounds, finished with a 54-hole score of 12-over 876. The 58th-ranked Wildcats earned victories over three top-60 teams in No. 9 Ole Miss, No. 22 Purdue and No. 54 Furman, while they finished just one stroke behind No. 50 Minnesota.

Kansas State was paced by junior Carla Bernat, who tied for third place with a season low 54-hole score of 7-under par 209. Bernat, who shot under par all three rounds – including a 1-under par 71 in the final round – put together the sixth lowest 54-hole score in school history and the lowest since Reid Isaac shot a 205 in September 2020.

"Overall, it was a pretty solid round, but it fell short of the standard that we are looking to achieve at K-State," head coach Stew Burke said. "Today was a little bit frustrating as we gave ourselves some good looks at birdie, but we just couldn't capitalize on the opportunities. We look forward to getting back to Manhattan, working on our wedges and getting ready to head out to Arizona later in the month."

Bernat carded her second top-five showing this season, the most by a Wildcat since Isaac had three in 2019-20. A product of Castellon, Spain, Bernat finished just one shot out of second place, which went to LSU's Ingrid Lindblad – who is currently ranked No. 4 in the nation – while she tied No. 40 Megan Schofill of Auburn.

The Wildcats received a solid counting round on Tuesday from freshman Alenka Navarro, who shot even par. She moved 12 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 42nd place at 6-over par 222. Navarro, a product of Mexico City, parred 16 of Tuesday's 18 holes with a birdie on No. 6 and a bogey on No. 16.

Sophomore Noa van Beek also tied for 42nd place as she equaled her second-round score of 1-over par 73 in the final round. van Beek moved 17 spots up the leaderboard after sitting in a tie for 59th place following the opening round.

Senior Haley Vargas put together her best round of the tournament on Tuesday at 2-over par 74, climbing four spots to a tie for 72nd place at 13-over par 229. Freshman Julia Ballester Barrio also tied for 72nd place.

Third-ranked Arkansas fired a 12-under par 276 on Tuesday to take the team at 10-under par 854 after beginning the day in fourth place. The Razorbacks edged No. 11 LSU by one shot, while No. 17 Auburn finished third at 8-under par 856 thanks to an 11-under par final round.

Furman's Anna Morgan, the 13th-ranked player in the nation, took the individual title at 10-under par 206.

Kansas State will be back in action February 25-26, as the Wildcats compete in the Westbrook Invitational held at Westbrook Village GC in Peoria, Arizona.
