Eight-Run Seventh Lifts K-State to Series-Clinching Win

Mar 16, 2024 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. –K-State used a late power surge to battle back from a three-run deficit and claim the weekend series with a 12-6 victory over Missouri State on Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.

"I thought that was the ultimate team win," head coach Pete Hughes said after his team's series-clinching win. "I couldn't be prouder of our team. We won a series against a very, very good team."

The Wildcats (12-6) dug themselves into a 3-1 hole after the opening frame but rallied with eight runs on six hits in the seventh, including a game-tying hit from Jaden Parsons before taking the lead for good with a two-run single by pinch hitter Cayden Phillips.

"We have two guys in our program that haven't played a lot of baseball this year, but they're the ultimate team guys. They're unselfish and they're all about Kansas State baseball and not themselves. When you have that mindset, and when your number gets called, you're in a really good position to have success," Hughes added.

"Jaden Parsons got his first start for the Cats today and delivered a huge hit to tie the game and then one of our team's favorite guys, Cayden Phillips, who just does everything right at a high level, got his number called today and got a huge hit to have us take the lead and to run away with that inning."

On the mound, Cole Wisenbaker was solid in his seventh appearance of the season, tossing 3 1/3 shutout innings with a career-high six strikeouts on his way to pick up the win (1-0).

"I can't say enough about what Cole Wisenbaker did coming out of the bullpen. He went three and a third and stifled a very good and potent offense, even a scary one. He did an unbelievable job keeping them off balance."

The lefty from Houston, Texas took over for starter Jacob Frost in the fourth and retired 10 of the 11 batters he faced with just one walk.

Eight players turned in a hit in the victory with four producing multiple. Kaelen Culpepper and Chuck Ingram each had three-hit days and drove in a pair of runs. Brady Day, Parsons, and Phillips each also had a pair of RBIs in the win.

Hunter Day (1-3) suffered the loss in relief for Missouri State (9-8), as the right-hander allowed four runs, all earned, over one inning on three hits.

THE RUNDOWN
The Bears opened scoring in the first frame with a three-run blast to right by Caden Bogenpohl.

Brendan Jones and Culpepper each singled to make it a first and third situation until Jones scored on a grounder to second by Brady Day to trim the Bears lead, 3-1.

Trailing 6-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, Culpepper singled into left before advancing to second on a throwing error after a failed pickoff attempt. The junior shortstop scored on a double by Nick English to bring Parsons to the plate.

Parsons, a graduate transfer from Central Oklahoma, drove the first pitch into center to deliver a two-run single and tie the game at 6-all, forcing Missouri State to make their first call to the bullpen.

With Parsons on third and Kyan Lodice on second, K-State put in Phillips to pinch hit with two outs. The Amarillo, Texas product laced a one-two pitch into right for the go-ahead lead.

K-State added three runs to the board to cap the eight-run rally, that included a two-run homer by Ingram – his fifth of the season.

Freshman Blake Dean made sure there would be no comeback for the Bears, tossing two shutout innings to finish the game.
