TUCSON, Ariz. – Kansas State junior women's golfer Carla Bernat carded a 4-under par 68 on Saturday to rise 11 spots on the leaderboard into fourth place during the second round of the MountainView Collegiate held at the par-72, 6,345-yard Preserve Golf Club.
As a team, the Wildcats carded a 2-over par 290 during the second round and enter Sunday's final round in seventh place with a 36-hole score of 3-over par 579.
"It was another solid round for the team today with a few opportunities missed both early and late in the round," head coach Stew Burke said. "We pressed a little too hard at the wrong times to try and move up, but lessons were learned today. I'm proud of how the ladies are conducting themselves. With a little more self-belief, I know we'll be in a great spot tomorrow. Our ultimate goal is to shoot a good closing round and see where that puts us on the leaderboard."
Bernat, a product of Castellon, Spain, went bogey free and 2-under par on the front 9 and was 3-under par on the back 9 until a bogey on her final hole of the day. It was Bernat's team-leading 11th under-par round this season, including her eighth in the 60s.
With her performance, Bernat is now 4-under par 140 for the event, just two shots back of a tie for first place between Arkansas' Maria Jose Marin and Iowa State's Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn.
Another under-par round was turned in by freshman Julia Ballester Barrio, who is competing as an individual. She recorded her second under-par round of the season at 2-under par 70, which was a 12-stroke improvement from her first-round score. The Castellon, Spain, native rose 16 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 16th place at 8-over par 152.
Senior Haley Vargas recorded her second-straight round of even-par 72, and she was able to do so thanks to a bogey-free and 2-under par back 9 after a pair of double-bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6. She enters the final round tied for 18th place at even-par 144.
Napua Glossner, another senior, parred each of her first 12 holes on Saturday but had a pair of bogeys down the stretch as she carded a 2-over par 74. She begins play on Sunday tied for 28th place at 1-over par 145.
Sophomore Noa van Beek carded a 4-over par 76 on Saturday and enters the final round in a tie for 52nd place at 5-over par 150. Senior Gabriela McNelly is in 81st place at 18-over par 162 following a round of 11-over par 83 on Saturday.
Texas A&M caught first-round leader South Florida thanks to a round of 6-under par 282 on Saturday. The Aggies and Bulls enter the final round at 5-under par 571, just one shot ahead of a third-place tie between Houston and Iowa State.
The final round of the MountainView Collegiate is scheduled for a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. (PT) with the Wildcats beginning on hole Nos. 7-9. Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
