K-State's Season Ends With 4-0 Loss to Texas in Big 12 Quarterfinals

The Wildcats finish the season 12-12, the second best record in six seasons
STILLWATER, Okla.- The no. 10 seed K-State women's tennis team could not hang on against no. 2 seed Texas, losing 4-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Championship on Thursday (April 18) at Greenwood Tennis Center.
#73 K-State (12-12) battled all the way to three sets in four singles matches against #7 Texas (20-4), but could not secure a point.
The Wildcats dropped the doubles point, unable to keep momentum. Junior Veronika Kulhava and freshman Tereza Polakova faced #36 Malaika Rapolu and Tanya Sasnouskaya for the second time this season in the no. 1 spot, this time losing 6-1. Freshman Jillian Harkin and senior Manami Ukita faced Charlotte Chavatipon and Vivian Ovrootsky in the no. 3 position where they were defeated 6-2.
Freshman Maralgoo Chogsomjav and sophomore Maria Santos went unfinished, 2-5, in the no. 2 spot against Taisiya Pachkaleva and Sabina Zeynalova.
Ukita, one of two seniors on the team this season, along with Aleen Quamar, was defeated in straight sets by #120 Pachkaleva in the no. 4 position, 6-3, 6-3.
Back in the no. 1 spot, sophomore Vanesa Suarez faced #22 Rapolu where she fell short after attempting a comeback in the second set, 6-2, 7-5.
The four remaining singles matches all advanced to the third set. Polakova faced her first ranked opponent of the spring, #37 Sasnouskaya in the no. 4 position, where she swept the first set 6-1, but then fell short in the next two, losing 6-1, 4-6, 3-6.
After not competing in singles during the first round against TCU, Kulhava faced Vivian Ovrootsky in the no. 5 spot. Kulhava dropped the first set 4-6 before winning the high scoring second, 7-5. She was leading the third set 3-2 before it went unfinished.
Chogsomjav faced a consecutive three set match. In the no. 3 position, Chogsomjav claimed the first set tiebreaker against #122 Chavatipon 7-6 (7-5) but could not keep the momentum, falling 6-1 in the second. She went unfinished in the third up 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 2-1.
Santos faced a similar opponent from the regular season match against the Longhorns on March 24, Shachf Lieberman, in the no. 6 spot. Santos captured the first set but could not clinch the second set tiebreaker, which led to an unfinished third set at 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 0-1.
K-State's season ends 12-12, 4-9 Big 12, the second most wins under head coach Jordan Smith in his six seasons. The Wildcats collected four conference wins, tied for the most since 2017, in the first season of the expanded 14 Big 12 teams.
During the spring, the team took up residence in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings for five weeks, reaching it's highest ranking at no. 58 on February 27. Suarez was the only Wildcat to land in the ITA singles rankings, first appearing after the end of fall competition at no. 80 and reaching her highest at no. 58 on February 20.
