AUSTIN, Texas – Kansas State junior men's golfer Cooper Schultz concluded the 2024 NCAA Austin Regional in a tie for 30th place at 3-over par 216 following final-round action on Wednesday at the par-71, 7,399-yard UT Golf Club.
Schultz, who carded a 2-over par 73 over the final 18 holes, recorded the best finish by a Wildcat in an NCAA Regional who was competing solely as an individual since Jeremy Gandon also tied for 30th at the 2018 NCAA Pacific Regional.
Much like he did during Monday's first round, Schultz began final-round play with a string of pars over the first eight holes and capped his front 9 with a birdie on the par-5 9th hole. He bogeyed No. 10 but quickly birdied the par-5 11th and the par-5 14th. However, he carded double bogey on No. 15 followed by bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17 before he closed out his season with a par on No. 18.
"I thought Cooper played pretty well this week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "He was really solid today up until No. 15, where a double bogey halted his momentum. His ball striking was very good, but he just wasn't able to get hot with the putter."
A native of Andover, Kansas, Schultz now holds a 71.80 career scoring average, which is currently the top mark in school history. He finished his junior campaign with a 71.12 average to rank third in school history, just ahead of the 71.15 mark he put together as a sophomore.
"All in all, he had a great year," Robbins said of Schultz. "He has really come a long way in all areas of his game, especially his short game. This was a great experience for him, and I know he's going to come back even better in the fall."
Texas' Christiaan Maas won the individual title at 9-under par 204, while UNC Greensboro's Kelvin Hernandez will move on to the NCAA Championship as the top individual on a non-advancing team as he tied for third place at 6-under par 207.
Texas won the event at 27-under par 825, while Tennessee, Notre Dame, Utah and Wake Forest will advance to the NCAA Championship. The Demon Deacons claimed the last spot as they defeated BYU in a playoff.
