Six Wildcats have now been honored since the first year in 2016
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team features two freshmen—Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Charlotte Keitel—on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team released Thursday (May 2).
"Really proud of what Charlotte and Maggie were able to do on the singles court this spring," head coach Jordan Smith said. "Both of them competed extremely well throughout the season. Along with the success from Teri [Tereza Polakova] in both singles and doubles, as well as Jill [Jillian Harkin] in doubles. Our freshmen group did a fantastic job and excited about their future progress."
Since the first All-Freshman honors back in 2016, six Wildcats have been named, including sophomore Vanesa Suarez last season, Millie Stretton in the first year and Margot Decker and Maria Linares in 2018.
Chogsomjav joined the Wildcats in January prior to the spring season, where she accumulated a 10-3 singles record, 5-2 in conference play. Early in the season she went on a five match win streak from February 9 to March 3 and faced three Big 12 ranked opponents in unfinished matches.
Chogsomjav claimed the one point for the Wildcats in the March 3 match against Kansas, defeating Jocelyn Massey 7-5, 6-3 and won her only three-set conference match against Callie Flanagan of Cincinnati, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Keitel collected a 26-9 singles record for the year, finishing 13-6 in the spring with a team-high seven Big 12 wins. She almost went undefeated in three-set matches, with a 7-1 record, 2-0 in conference matches.
Keitel's two three-set Big 12 wins were consecutively on March 7 over BYU's Jacque Dunyon, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, and again on March 9 over Kate Dmitrichenko from Texas Tech, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 10-3
Back in fall competition, Keitel went 13-3 among four tournaments, being awarded Singles Co-Champion with Polakova at the TCU Invitational and individual Singles Champion of the white draw during the Big 12 Fall Invitational.
Others on the All-Freshman team include Kansas' Kyoka Kubo, Oklahoma's Chloe Noel, Raquel Caballero from TCU and Olivia Lincer from UCF in the team's first season in the conference.
