K-State, Iowa State Collect Five Wins Each to Start Duel in the Desert

Wildcats win four of seven singles matches, Cyclones with two out of three doubles
The K-State women's tennis team began the spring season on Thursday (Jan. 16) against Iowa State, with both teams winning five matches in the first day of the Duel in the Desert at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden near Palm Springs, Calif.
The Wildcats won four out of seven singles matches while the Cyclones won two out of three doubles matches. It was the first match in a three-day hidden duel format hosted by Kansas.
K-State competed with new doubles duos, successful in one match up. Sophomores Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Charlotte Keitel won with a 6-1 decision over Mari Paz Alberto Vilar and Suzanie Prestorius.
Senior Veronika Kulhava and junior Maria Santos encountered a tiebreaker against Julia Camblor and Valeska San Martin Ramirez but fell short 6-7 (3-7). Junior Sana Garakani and sophomore Tereza Polakova were defeated 6-2 by Cristina Ramos Sierra and Anna Supapitch Kuearum.
Four Wildcats were victorious in singles play, two of them in three sets-- Santos defeated Ramos 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, Kulhava swept the first set over Prestorius 6-0 and had to battle back in the third, winning 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.
In her first dual match as a Wildcat, Garakani played against San Martin, coming out on top 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Zali Morris also stepped on the court sweeping Gabriela Felix 6-2, 6-0.
After a win in doubles play, Chogsomjav fell short individually against Camblor, 6-2, 6-2. Facing #64 ranked Supapitch, Keitel battled in a high scoring second set but could not secure a win, falling 2-6, 5-7. Polakova faced Alberto and was unable to string together a point in the first set, losing 0-6, 3-6.
The Wildcats will resume Duel in the Desert competition on Friday (Jan. 17) against Arkansas around 2:30 p.m. CT.

"We did OK today. Clearly not where we need to be. However, it's our first time competing in two months after a week of training. So have mixed feelings of how to view the day."

"Thankfully we don't have to wait long to make improvements from today. Our tennis is there. Just need to get back to being a team and competing like it. Overall, we're getting better and going to be OK."
