Wildcats Begin Spring in California at Duel in the Desert

K-State will face Iowa State, Arkansas and Kansas at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden
The K-State women's tennis team begins the 2025 spring season in the three-day Duel in the Desert tournament on Thursday-Saturday (Jan. 16-18) near Palm Springs, Calif., at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Playing in a hidden duel format, hosted by Kansas, K-State will also compete against conference familiar Iowa State and Arkansas, who attended the K-State Invitational in the fall.

With matches starting around 2:30 p.m. CT, every day, the Wildcats will begin play against the Cyclones on Thursday before facing the Razorbacks on Friday and Jayhawks on Saturday.

This will be the first of two meetings against the Iowa State and Kansas, K-State is set to face the two teams consecutively in the final road trip prior to the Big 12 Championship in April.

The Wildcats have previously competed in a tournament against Arkansas during the ITA Kickoff Weekend in 2023.

In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) final fall national ranking from December 3, two K-State doubles teams were featured-- senior Veronika Kulhava and sophomore Tereza Polakova ranked no. 50 and sophomore Maralgoo Chogsomjav and junior Maria Santos at no. 58.

Fall highlights from the doubles duos include Kulhava and Polakova defeating the no. 1 ranked team from Oklahoma State, Ange Oby Kajuru and Anastasiya Komar, 8-7 (8-6) at the ITA Central Regional. During the same tournament, Chogsomjav and Santos advanced to the semifinal round, qualifying them for the ITA Central Sectional Championship.

The Big 12 Conference announced the preseason team poll on January 7, with the Wildcats ranked no. 10 with 90 points. Oklahoma State was projected as no. 1 for a consecutive season with 225 points and 15 first-place votes.

Another season with four new conference members, Arizona State was in the preseason top-5 at no. 4 with 184 points and the remaining first-place vote. Three other schools are further in the rankings with Arizona (no. 9; 128 points), Colorado (no. 12; 70 points) and Utah (no. 13; 62 points) tied with Houston. Â
