Hazen Breaks 3,000 Meter Records as Wildcats Hosted KU-KSU-WSU Triangular
Jan 17, 2025 | Track & Field
K-State started seasoning hosting the Triangular for the first time in the Cliff Rovelto Indoor Track
Senior Tommy Hazen recorded his 3,000 meter personal best on Friday (Jan. 17) while breaking the K-State school, facility and KU-KSU-WSU Triangular meet record at the Cliff Rovelto Indoor Track to start the indoor season.
Hazen's time of 8:03.77 is 10 seconds faster than his previous best, topping Hadley Splechter's school record from 2022 of 8:05.51 and the 8:15.27 meet time from WSU's Adrian Diaz-Lopez in 2023.
"Tommy Hazen, I mean Tommy, school record [right] out of the shoot, what Coach Kate [Bucknam] has done with Tommy, and just the smile on that kid's face after the race was, was phenomenal." Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Travis Geopfert said.
After 31 events, the Wildcats finished with 188 points, Kansas winning with 254 points and Wichita State with 210 points.
Junior Gary Moore Jr., tied for the men's high point award with 14 points. A transfer from Baylor, Moore Jr. won both the weight throw, 20.90m (68'7"), that throw no. 5 in the men's school records, and the shot put, 17.90m (58'8.75").
"Gary did a great job, high point score is phenomenal, and to win two events the first time in the purple was fantastic," Geopfert said. "And he's just such a great kid, a positive attitude, tremendous effort and we know that there's more in the tank for him."
Freshman Stella Miner claimed a record of her own in the 1,000 meters, her time of 2:51.74 a new facility record. In the women's 400 meters, junior Safhia Hinds won with a new personal best in 54.90, no. 10 in the school records.
The Wildcats competed in the jumping events with a short approach, winning both the men's and women's high jump—senior Bryce Collins, 2.03m (6'8"), and junior Sharie Enoe, 1.80m (5'10.75"), and the women's triple jump with senior Tesia Thomas, 5.96m (19'7").
K-State collected two more women's field event first place spots-- senior Monique Hardy in the weight throw, 19.79m (64'11.25") and senior Jaycee Schroeder in the shot put, 15.74m (51'7.75").
The Cats started off strong on the track, sophomore Mikah Scott ran her best in two events, including runner-up in the 60 meter dash (7.64 seconds) and the 200 meter dash (4th; 24.58). Junior Grace Meyer ran in the 3,000 meters for the first time with a runner-up time of 9:47.96.
The final race of the meet, the 4x400 mixed relay, with Hinds, sophomore Tyrique Lewis, junior Jourdin Edwards and sophomore Nen Matlock, the Wildcats finished one-hundredth of a second behind first place KU.
"I celebrated. I thought Nen out leaned him on that," Geopfert said. "It was awesome, just a tremendous effort, all those kids doubling back off the 400 or the 600 yards and to go just put those kind of splits down. Nen split a 46 low and almost had the comeback win for us, and this place would have erupted, because that was a heck of a crowd. I mean, it was just standing room in here, everywhere I look, almost all day long, it was standing room only."
K-State steps back on the track next week on Friday (Jan. 24) in Lubbock, Texas, in the Red Raider Invite at the Sports Performance Center.
FROM THE TRACK
Head Coach Travis Geopfert
On the performance and atmosphere in the track staff's first home meet…
"Overall, I was just super pleased with our student athletes' efforts, just the competitive efforts. You know, obviously, it's early, we trained through this meet, we even lifted hard yesterday. These kids, they didn't have a lot of legs under them, but they finished strong in all the races. The jumpers jumped really well from short approach. Just an unbelievable atmosphere. Congratulations to Kansas, they won the team title and did a great job, but it was a good, competitive meet, and overall, just the atmosphere and the efforts across the board. I'm just so thankful for this being our staff's first track meet here at Kansas State."
