K-State Loses First Road Match 4-0 at #5 Auburn

Wildcats are 0-1 in series history with the Tigers
AUBURN, Ala.- The K-State women's tennis team hit the road for the first time in dual action on Saturday (Feb. 15), losing to a ranked Auburn team, 4-0, at Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Facing its first ranked team on the road, K-State (2-3) fell short to the #5 Tigers (11-1), facing two ITA ranked doubles pairs and three women in the singles rankings.
The Wildcats dropped the doubles point, with sophomores Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Charlotte Keitel battling #12 DJ Bennett and Ava Hrastar in the no. 1 spot, losing 1-6. Also unsuccessful in their match was junior Sana Garakani and sophomore Tereza Polakova in the no. 3 position against Ava Esposito and Maria Garcia, 6-3.
Senior Veronika Kulhava and junior Maria Santos went toe-to-toe with #51 Angella Okutoyi and Merna Refaat in the no. 2 spot, before going unfinished 4-4.
Chogsomjav dropped her first match against a ranked opponent, facing #116 Hrastar in the no. 2 spot with a score of 3-6, 1-6. Kulhava fought in the first set against Esposito in the no. 5 position, 4-6, before losing 6-4, 6-1.
Sophomore Zali Morris competed in her first dual match of the season, falling short to Maria Garcia, 6-1, 6-2, in the no. 6 position.
Three Wildcats' matches went unfinished as they all battled back in the second set.
Keitel faced her second ranked opponent in the no. 1 spot, #2 Bennett, dropping the first set 1-6 before a 4-4 tie in the second. Also against a ranked opponent, Polakova encountered a high scoring match with #58 Okutoyi in the no. 3 position, going unfinished at 4-6, 4-5.
Playing in the no. 4 position for the first time, Garakani fought in her match against Refaat in the no. 4 spot, dropping the first set 4-6 before battling 3-5 in the second when the match concluded.
K-State will face Iowa (4-2) on Friday (Feb. 21) in Kansas City, Mo., at 12 p.m. On Sunday (Feb. 23) they will be back in Manhattan to play Rice (5-3) at Body First Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
