Wildcats Wrap Up Non-Conference Slate This Weekend

Feb 21, 2025 | Tennis

K-State will face a ranked opponent at home the first time this season

MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team wraps up the non-conference slate with two matches, on Saturday (Feb. 22) against Iowa and Sunday (Feb. 23) at home against Rice.

The Wildcats (2-3) will face the #51 Iowa Hawkeyes (5-2) in Kansas City, Kan., on Saturday at 2 p.m., at the Homestead Country Club.

The series is tied 3-3 between the Cats and Iowa, with K-State victorious last season 4-1. On February 3, 2024, senior Veronika Kulhava and sophomores Charlotte Keitel and Tereza Polakova were all successful in their matches in the no. 2-4 spots.

The Hawkeyes have two players featured in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings from February 20, Tereza Dejnozkova at no. 77 and Daianne Hayashida at no. 118. Team also has one doubles pair at no. 90 with Nikita Vishwase and Dejnozkova.

Back at home on Sunday, the Wildcats will face the #48 Rice Owls (5-3) at 10 a.m., at Body First Tennis Center.

In 2019, in the only previous match between the Cats and Rice in the last ten years, the Owls won with a 6-1 decision.

Rice also feature a doubles team in the ITA rankings at no. 33 with Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez.

On February 15, while facing the first ranked opponent so far this season in #5 Auburn, K-State fell short 4-0, playing against multiple ranked women. Keitel faced no. 2 DJ Bennett, tying up the second set before the match went unfinished at 1-6, 4-4. Keitel and sophomore Maralgoo Chogsomjav also faced top ranked no. 12 Bennett and Ava Hrastar in doubles play.

The Wildcats will then begin Big 12 play on Friday, February 28, against #20 UCF, set for a 4 p.m. start at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
