Wildcats earn their first ranked win since 2022

KANSAS CITY, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team bounced back from a three-match losing streak with a 4-3 victory over #51 Iowa in a neutral site match on Saturday (Feb. 22) at Homestead Country Club. It marks the first ranked win for K-State since March 26, 2022, against #41 Tulsa, 4-2.

The Wildcats (3-3) won the doubles point, the first time since January 25 against Drake, before finding success in tiebreaker sets against the Hawkeyes (5-3).

Sophomores Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Charlotte Keitel swept no. 90 ranked pair Tereza Dejnozkova and Nikita Vishwase in the no. 1 spot, 6-1. Junior Sana Garkani and sophomore Tereza Polakova clinched the doubles point in the no. 2 position with a win over Daianne Hayashida and Marisa Schmidt, 6-3.

Senior Veronika Kulhava and junior Maria Santos were up 5-3 over Barbora Pokorna and Pia Kranholdt in the no. 3 spot when their match was paused.

Kulhava won the match for K-State by sweeping Sally Xu in the no. 6 position. After flying through the first set, the two went back and forth in the second to force a tiebreaker, Kulhava coming out on top 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Chogsomjav and Polakova claimed the two other singles wins for the Wildcats, both encountering tiebreakers and battling into three sets. Chogsomjav won the first set tiebreaker over Schmidt 7-6 (7-5) in the no. 3 spot. After dropping the second set she faced little resistance in the third for a final of 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-1, breaking a three-match losing drought.

Polakova dropped her first set against Vishwase in the no. 4 position before battling back in consecutive high scoring sets. She was victorious in the second set before facing a 7-6 third set tiebreaker herself, winning with a score of 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

Keitel and Santos both faced ranked opponents in the no. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. Keitel swept #77 Dejnozkova in the first set, 6-0, but after dropping the second she could not keep the momentum, losing 6-0, 3-6, 4-6, now 0-2 against ranked opponents in the spring. Santos was defeated by her first ranked opponent, #118 Hayashida, 1-6, 1-6.

Garakani faced Kranholdt in the no. 5 position, where she fell short in the first and could not battle back in a second set tiebreaker, unsuccessful at 4-6, 6-7 (4-7).

K-State will face one last non-conference opponent on Sunday (Feb. 23) with #48 Rice (5-4) at home at Body First Tennis Center at 10 a.m.

FROM THE COURTS
Head Coach Jordan Smith
On the keys to victory against a ranked Iowa team…
"That was a battle and awesome to be a part of a great college tennis match like today. Iowa is a tough team and already beaten a lot of good teams so far, we had to earn everything. We've been telling our team that we're right there and just have to get it going in doubles, which we did today. Today we handled pressure situations extremely well and that helped us pull out the victory today. Need to back it up tomorrow against Rice."
