Bert, K-State Ties School Records as Wildcats Finish Third

Feb 24, 2025 | Women's Golf

PEORIA, Ariz. – Following a round of 3-under par 69 on Monday, Kansas State senior women's golfer Sophie Bert finished with a 54-hole score of 12-under par 204 – tying the school record – as she led the Wildcats to a school-record tying score of 24-under par 840 to finish in third place at the Westbrook Invitational at the par-72, 6,248-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club.

Bert tied the school record of Christine Boucher, who carded a 204 at the Edwin Watts Invitational in November 2002. A transfer from East Tennessee State, Bert shattered her previous best career 54-hole score in a collegiate tournament, which was a 211 at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in October. She finished in a second-place tie, her fifth collegiate top-five finish and first this season.

K-State's 54-hole score tied the record originally set at last year's Westbrook Invitational. Each of the top four 54-hole scores in school history have come within the last calendar year, including three this season.

The Wildcats had all five members of the scoring lineup shoot under par on Monday as they went 13-under par 275, which was the third-lowest round in school history behind the 274 they posted on Sunday afternoon and the 269 at the Schooner Fall Classic in September.

"We played another really nice round today with some promising signs moving into MountainView next week," said head coach Stew Burke, whose team recorded their fourth top-three finish this season, the most since 2016-17. "It was a great round by Carla (Bernat) and another solid final round by Sophie to help secure the runner-up spot. Unfortunately, we were not able to move up on the leaderboard. Weeks like this are just a learning experience, especially on golf courses where you know you have to go low in order to win. This group has made some massive strides, especially given our limited outdoor practice prior to this event. We are looking forward to a short stay in Manhattan before being back in the desert next week."

Kansas State recorded 59 birdies over the three rounds to tie for first among the 14-team field, while it finished third in both par-4 scoring (-13) and par-5 scoring (-16).

Senior Carla Bernat joined Bert in the top five as she finished in fifth place at 10-under par 206, rising 10 spots on Monday thanks to a bogey-free round of 7-under par 65, which included a 5-under par back 9. A transfer from Tulane, Bernat now has four top-five finishes this year and 18 in her collegiate career, while her 10 top-five showings as a Wildcat rank second in school history.

By now playing in 51 career rounds as a Wildcat, Bernat qualified for the school's top-10 list in career scoring average as her 70.84 mark currently ranks first in school history by over three shots per round.

Junior Noa van Beek recorded a final-round total of 2-under par 70 and remained in 21st place as she finished at 3-under par 213, tying the best 54-hole score of her career with her other two starts at the Westbrook Invitational in 2023 and 2024. She narrowly missed out on her second top-20 finish of the season.

Freshman Nanami Nakashima finished in 36th place at 1-over par 217 following a round of 1-under par 71 on Monday. Sophomore Julia Ballester Barrio also recorded a 1-under par 71 during the final round to finish in a tie for 49th place at 5-over par 221. Playing as an individual, sophomore Alenka Navarro tied for 38th place with a 54-hole score of 2-over par 218.

No. 25 Kansas earned the team title at 39-under par 825, nine shots better than No. 35 UNLV, which finished second. Kansas also had the individual winner in Lauren Clark, who recorded a 54-hole score of 17-under par 199.

Next action for the Wildcats is Sunday through Tuesday when they co-host the MountainView Collegiate at The Preserve Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona.
