PEORIA, Ariz. – Kansas State senior women's golfer Sophie Bert carded a school-record round of 9-under par 63 on Sunday afternoon to lead the Wildcats over the first 36 holes of the Westbrook Invitational at the par-72, 6,248-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club.
Bert, who topped a school record that stood for over 22 years, went bogey free in the second round with six birdies over the front 9 and three over the back 9. The Deurle, Belgium, native enters the second round in second place at 9-under par 135.
As a team, the Wildcats bounced back from a first-round total of 3-over par with a score of 14-under par 274 in the second round – the second-lowest round in school history – as they are in second place at 11-under par 565. The 2024-25 Wildcats now have the top four team rounds in school history.
"Our first round today was just poor. We made too many unforced errors and just didn't take advantage of any of our opportunities," head coach Stew Burke said. "The second round was much better with a good round from Noa (van Beek), very good round from Carla (Bernat) and a great round from Sophie. Overall, they really pulled themselves out of a big hole. We will try to ride that momentum into tomorrow's round and look to move up the leaderboard."
Bert's second-round total was one shot better than the previous school record of 64 shot by Christine Boucher during the third round of the Edwin Watts Invitational on November 5, 2002. Bert recorded her fourth round in the 60s this season and fifth in her collegiate career. She is three shots back of first place, which is currently held by Kansas' Lauren Clark at 12-under par 132.
Backed by a round of 4-under par 68 in the second round, senior Carla Bernat is tied for 15th place at 3-under par 141 as she went bogey-free and 5-under par in the afternoon until a bogey on her final hole of the day. It was her 32nd collegiate round in the 60s and seventh this season, including her second of the spring campaign.
Junior Noa van Beek is two shots behind Bernat and tied for 21st place at 1-under par 143, which included a total of 2-under par 70 in the second round.
Freshman Nanami Nakashima enters Monday's final round tied for 37th place at 2-over par 146, while sophomore Julia Ballester Barrio is tied for 57th place at 6-over par 150.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Alenka Navarro is tied for 27th place at even-par 144, which included a round of 1-under par 71 over the first 18 holes.
No. 25 Kansas leads the 14-team field at 26-under par 550, 15 shots ahead of the Wildcats. No. 35 UNLV is one shot back of K-State at 10-under par 566.
A shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (MST) begins play for the final round of the Westbrook Invitational on Monday. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd.
