Mar 01, 2025 | Track & Field

A total of 14 medals and 20 medalists came from K-State

LUBBOCK, Texas – The K-State track and field teams wrapped up the Big 12 Championship on Saturday (March 1) with eight more medals for a total of 14 new pieces of hardware, and 20 medalists, making a home in Manhattan.

After two days and 19 events, the women's team earned an 8th place finish, out of 16 teams, with 43.5 points. That ties the team's best finish since 2023 with the most points since 56 in 2022. The men's team landed in 13th place with 14.5 points. Texas Tech swept the championship for both teams, the men collecting 130 points and the women with 113.5 points.

All three Wildcats competing in the women's triple jump gave a podium finish, providing an event-high 13 points for the women's team, all with personal best distances. It included another runner-up finish during the weekend for senior Shalom Olotu launching herself to 13.35m (43' 9 ¾") and the new no. 5 spot in the K-State indoor books, her first medal in the event.

Sophomore Taylor Mayo earned her first conference medal and a spot in the K-State top-10 at no. 9 with her best jump by almost a foot at 13.02m (42' 8 ¾") in 6th place. Right next to Mayo on the podium was senior Tesia Thomas in 7th place with her farthest performance of 12.95m (42' 6").

"Collectively, our triple jumpers, all of them personal bests. Taylor Mayo getting over that 13 meter mark for the first time in her career, absolutely fantastic job. Tesia Thomas, PR in the triple jump as well, both of them just great series of jumps, tremendous competitors today. Shalom Olotu, another runner-up finish in the Big 12 meet, just did a great job, another personal record for her, and just this breakout season, so proud of her. Runner-up in the long jump, runner-up in the triple jump, and like we mentioned yesterday, demanding more of herself now and just her efforts are fantastic. And what Coach Clive Pullen has done with her is just awesome."

Freshman Stella Miner was the youngest Wildcat to earn an individual medal, running in the women's 1,000 meters for a bronze finish time of 2:49.38.

K-State medaled in both the women's and men's high jump events. Junior Sharie Enoe claimed the 4th place spot clearing a height of 1.87m (6' 1 ½"), just half an inch short of her personal best. Junior Bryce Collins tied for 7th in the men's high jump tying his season's best height of 2.03m (6' 8").

To wrap up the day, the women's 4x400 relay team, with juniors Jourdin Edwards and Safhia Hinds, freshman Ariana Jackson and junior Delaney Wright, running their new season best time of 3:37.10 (3:37.54, altitude converted) in 8th place.

Freshman Tommaso Franze wrapped up the men's heptathlon in the morning with a new personal best of 5,157 points. He ran his fastest 60 meter hurdles in 8.61 seconds and finished 10th in both the pole vault (4.71m, 15' 5 ½") and the 1,000 meters (2:50.35).

The Wildcats now wait to see who has qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship in Virgina Beach, Va., on March 14-15.

FROM THE TRACK
Head Coach Travis Geopfert
On the team securing multiple top-8 finishes to score points…
"We had a number of kids that had never scored a point at the conference championships before that did it today. Bryce Collins in the high jump is a big deal, got seventh place, scored a point for the team, really proud of him. That women's 4x4, members of that 4x4 hadn't scored a point before they did. I have to mention Safhia Hinds on that second leg, she ran a 51.9 split and just did a phenomenal job, you know, learn from her race yesterday, and then applied herself today, and just really proud of her. And Daisy in the shot put, scored a point for the team as a senior. And again, I think going out scoring points is a big deal, really proud of the team."

On the performance from true freshman Stella Miner
"Stella Miner an All-Big 12 performance in the 1,000 meters, it's just so impressive for her to run so aggressively. And she had mentioned it afterwards, she'd never run that aggressively before in her life, and just felt the confidence to go get in there and make a move and did it. To be top-three in a middle distance race in the Big 12 as a true freshman, it's amazing, so super proud of her. She did a phenomenal job."

On the support the team gets…
"I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I'm really proud of all these kids, and I'm really proud of all these coaches. It's a village of people at Kansas State that are behind these student athletes. And it's not just us coaches, it's our athletic trainers, it's our support staff… and the medical, it's our social media group that's crushing it in every way. It's just, it's awesome, you know. And the support from all those people to these student athletes and our administrators to these student athletes, it's special. And the kids feel that love, and they will run through a brick wall for us. And really, it's a great team effort across the board, and a lot of exciting things to build on."
