K-State Falls to Iowa State 4-1 in First of Final Road Matches

Wildcats are back at .500 in Big 12 matches this season
AMES, Iowa- The K-State women's tennis team started the last road match ups of the regular season on Friday (April 11) with a 4-1 loss to Iowa State at the Forker Tennis Courts.

#53 K-State (9-10, 6-6 Big 12) fell short in doubles matches against #65 Iowa State (11-9, 5-7 Big 12) and was in the process of battling back in singles competition with three set matches.

Sophomores Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Charlotte Keitel could only string together one point against Anna Supapitch Kuearum and Cristina Ramos Sierra in the no. 1 spot, falling 1-6. Juniors Sana Garakani and Maria Santos partnered together for the first time this spring, posting a 2-6 result in the no. 2 position against Julia Camblor and Mari Paz Vilar.

After landing in the ITA doubles rankings in the fall, senior Veronika Kulhava and sophomore Tereza Polakova competed together again for the first time, leading Suzanie Pretorius and Valeska San Martin in the no. 3 spot 5-2 before going unfinished.

Chogsomjav was victorious in three sets to earn the Wildcats only point, defeating her first ranked opponent. Playing in the no. 1 position for the first time this season, she faced #119 Kuearum where she started the match in a low scoring set. She bounced back in the second at 6-4 to force a third and final set where she almost left Kuearum scoreless in a final of 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. Chogsomjav previously faced three ranked opponents this season, with two unfinished matches.

Kulhava battled against Ramos Sierra in the no. 4 spot after going scoreless in the first set. She was able to string together points in the second set but could not force a third set, losing 0-6, 4-6.

Freshman Zhanel Rustemova competed in the no. 2 position for the first time since March 1 against Houston. Facing Camblor, she could not find momentum in similar scoring straight sets at 1-6, 1-6.

Santos encountered a back-and-forth match versus Pretorius in the no. 5 spot. After falling short in the first set, she seemed to find her footing in the second, but it wasn't enough to force a tiebreaker, losing 4-6, 5-7.

Keitel and Polakova both went unfinished after starting a third set. After dropping the first set at 2-6 in the no. 3 position to Vilar, Keitel bounced back in a high scoring second at 7-5. She led with one point at stoppage time at 2-6, 7-5, 1-0.

Polakova also dropped her first set versus San Martin in the no. 6 spot at 4-6. She took an early lead in the second for a 6-3 win before ending with a tie at 4-6, 6-3, 1-1.

K-State will wrap up the regular season in the Sunflower Showdown on Sunday (April 13) against Kansas (12-9, 6-5 Big 12) at 12 p.m. in Lawrence, Kan., at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
