K-State Drops Regular Season Finale, 4-0 to #39 Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team ended the regular season on Sunday (April 13) in the Sunflower Showdown, falling short to Kansas, 4-0 at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
#53 K-State (9-11, 6-7 Big 12) dropped the doubles point for the last time in the regular season versus the #39 Jayhawks (13-10, 7-6 Big 12), also unable to find their footing in singles matches.
Both doubles matches went in favor of the Jayhawks with similar results. Juniors Sana Garakani and Maria Santos fell in the no. 2 spot to Jasmine Adams and Yerkezhan Arystanbekova, 2-6. Senior Veronika Kulhava and sophomore Tereza Polakova also dropped their match 2-6, in the no. 3 position to Anna Putilina and Kyoka Kubo.
Sophomores Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Charlotte Keitel faced their eighth ranked match up of the spring, against #33 Gracie Mulville and Heike Janse van Vuuren, ending the match tied at 4-4 in the no. 1 spot.
While facing a consecutive ranked opponent, Chogsomjav could not find repeated success. In the no. 1 position, she played #102 Mulville where she dropped the first set 2-6 and could not sustain any momentum in a similar set at 2-6, 2-6. Chogsomjav finished conference play 6-2, 1-1 in ranked match ups.
Keitel fell short in the no. 2 spot to Maria Titova in straight sets, only stringing together one point in both sets at 1-6, 1-6. Keitel went 2-3 on the no. 2 court this spring. Kulhava played in the no. 3 position for the first time this season, facing Kubo. She also stumbled in the first set 2-6 and was slow to score in the second with another 2-6, 2-6 loss for the Cats.
The last three courts all went unfinished in the second set. Santos had just wrapped up a first set tiebreaker against Janse Van Vuuren in the no. 4 spot. Santos came back from behind to force a tiebreaker but could not gain control with a 6-7 (3-7) result.
Polakova faced Adams for the second season in a row. Playing in the no. 5 position, she came up shy in the first set but was leading in the second, 4-6, 3-1, at stoppage. Last March the match also went unfinished with Polakova leading by one set.
Garakani competed in singles action for the first time in two weeks, since March 30 against TCU. Versus Putilina in the no. 6 spot, Garakani saw a similar first set score of 4-6 but was battling back-and-forth before ending at 4-6, 2-3.
K-State begins the postseason next week with the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday-Sunday (April 16-20) in Waco, Texas, at Hurd Tennis Center. After the conclusion of all regular season conference matches the women's bracket will be revealed.
