Frost Punches Out 10, KU Rallies to Take Series Opener
Apr 18, 2025 | Baseball
LAWRENCE, Kan. – A three-run blast from Jackson Hauge in the seventh propelled the Jayhawks to 5-3 victory on Friday night, as Kansas took the series opener of the Dillons Sunflower Showdown at Hoglund Ballpark.
With the win, KU improves to 29-10 overall while K-State moved to 23-15 on the year. Both squads moved into a three-way tie for third in the Big 12 standings alongside Arizona State, with records of 10-6 in league games.
"Devastating loss," head coach Pete Hughes commented. "Jacob Frost was awesome tonight. When you are up 3-0 with seven outs to go with your go-to guy on the mound, you feel great about your game plan, but it didn't go our way tonight."
Down 3-0, KU rallied to pull the score within two before Hauge belted his conference-leading 17th home run of the season to score the game-winning run.
"It should never come down to one swing. We had ample time to build on our lead and we didn't. We were in this situation a week ago. Although it stings pretty good, we will not let a Friday night loss beat us twice. We'll be ready to go," Hughes added.
Frost logged his first quality start of the season, as he held the Jayhawks to one run over a career-high 6 2/3 innings. The left-hander, who carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning without allowing a runner to reach scoring position, ended the night retiring 21 of the 27 batters he faced.
The St. Louis, Mo., product punched out 10 to cap his career outing, as he became the second Wildcat this season to record 10 strikeouts in a single game.
James Guyette (4-2) suffered the loss in relief of Frost, surrendering four runs on five hits over one inning.
"[Guyette] should hold his head high because he has bailed us out of many situations and won us a lot of games. We will absolutely go back to him tomorrow if the situation presents itself. He's a warrior."
KU starter Dominic Voegele, the Big 12 Preseason Pitcher of the Year, was spotted for three earned runs on five hits in his 5 2/3 innings. Manning West (3-1) was credited with the victory, logging 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Voegele, while Alex Breckheimer earned his third save.
Sam Flores and Donte Lewis each turned in two-hit efforts, with Lewis driving in a pair of runs for his fifth game with multiple RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Frost put momentum in the third base dugout, as the left-hander struck out the side in the opening frame. The Wildcats put a pair of runners on for the second consecutive inning, with Voegele walking three of the first seven batters he faced.
A fly ball into deep right field moved Keegan O'Connor and Maximus Martin into scoring position before Lewis delivered a clutch double down the right field line, handing the Cats a 2-0 lead.
Behind a 1-2-3 inning from Frost, Flores and O'Connor strung together a pair of hits to move to first and third. Evasco was hit by a pitch in the next at bat, loading the bases with two outs, until Flores jumped on a wild pitch to extend the lead.
Hauge ended Frost's no-hit bid in the fourth with a lead-off single into right field. A walk and fielding error loaded the bases, moving Jayhawks into scoring position for the first time of the night, but the runners were left stranded as Frost punched out his sixth batter to defend the lead.
After six scoreless innings, KU erupted for five runs over their final two frames, highlighted by Hauge's go-ahead three-run blast in the seventh.
